Lady Flames pull out 1-0 win

Chloe Woody’s score from Amy Cochran off a corner kick 10:40 into Saturday night’s match gave the Lee University women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Olivet Nazarene in the Lady Flames Classic.

Lee (3-1), ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, led only 12-10 in shots but had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks against the 4-2 Illinois team. Leah Wilson made four saves in the shutout.

Second-ranked Lindsey Wilson won 2-1 over Vanguard.

• Bryan 3, Point 0: At Dayton, the Lions improved to 4-1, 2-0 in the AAC, as Jorge Gonzalez scored in the sixth minute and Andrew Knighten and Nathan Adams added second-half goals. Jordan Devlin assisted on Knighten’s for Bryan, which outshot the Georgia team 36-7.

• Southern Polytechnic 4, Tennessee Wesleyan 0: At Athens, Emeka Maduka scored two of the NAIA’s eighth-ranked team’s three first-half goals as the Hornets improved to 4-1 while dropping the Bulldogs to 2-2-2.

• Tennessee Wesleyan (w) 4, Faulkner 1: At Athens, the Lady Bulldogs rose to 2-4 with Samaira Khan assisting Britten Fandrich on a goal 7:04 into the match and scoring herself 2:33 into the second half. Kimberly Key scored from an Abigal Fannin assist at 38:30, and Christa Rogers closed the scoring.

• Truett-McConnell 1, Covenant 0: At Covenant, Trent Taylor’s overtime goal from a Nils Conway assist lifted the visitors to 3-1 while dropping the offensively struggling Scots to 1-5. Shuler Polk made six saves in defeat.

• Covenant (w) 2, Huntingdon 1: The Lady Scots overcame an early 20-yard goal by Kate Garrigan with an equalizer late in the first half by Beth Wilkening from an Annie Sostok assist, and Mo Cross converted a Bethany Logan assist for the winner at 83:15. Covenant (4-1-1, 2-0 GSAC) outshot its guest 27-3 and had a 12-0 bulge in corner kicks.

• Emory (w) 9, Sewanee 0: At Atlanta, the No. 2 team in NCAA Division III blistered the Tigers (2-4) with eight first-half goals from seven players. Karina Rodriguez had two goals and an assist and Veronica Romero had three assists and a goal for the Eagles (4-0-1).

UTC loses two

Indiana University won 25-13, 25-9, 18-25, 25-14 Saturday at home in Bloomington over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team, which later lost 25-19, 25-14, 25-12 to Valparaiso (8-6).

Briana Reid had eight kills and Christina Teter and Jennifer Kuroski added seven and six against IU for the Mocs (6-9), while Bridget Camacho had 28 assists. Paula Passmore made 17 digs in each match. Reid and Sarah Batterton had nine and seven kills against Valparaiso, when Camacho had 25 assists and 12 digs and was named to the all-tournament team.

• At Lee University, the Lady Flames lost 25-23, 17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 17-15 in SSAC play against Spring Hill (11-3, 2-0), which got 18 kills from Megan Haber and 12 from Sha Sha Buchanan. For Lee (9-6, 2-1), Irene Ojukwu had an astounding 26 kills plus 12 digs, and Paula Martins added 16 kills while Camil Martinez had 64 assists and 19 digs to go with Libby Peigens’ 29 digs.

• At Sewanee, the host Tigers won a conference match for the first time since 2006, topping Southern Athletic Association foe Oglethorpe 19-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-18. Jamie Sue Wilson had eight kills and 14 digs and Kayla Sewell had 13 digs with six kills for Sewanee, which also got 10 digs from Maggie Stanford.

• At Demorest, Ga., Covenant beat LaGrange 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 but lost a close one to host Piedmont, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 26 and 50 assists in the two matches for the Lady Scots (7-3), along with 12 digs and six kills against Piedmont, when Chelsea Van Dyk and Jessica Chittenden had 23 and 18 kills. Estes Carlson had 19 digs in that match after totaling 14 in the win, when Cora Schroeder had eight kills.

• At Jefferson City, Tenn., Boyd-Buchanan graduate Rachel Harper had 11 and 12 kills and Cleveland’s Kristen Pickett had 28 assists in each match as Carson-Newman won 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 over UNC Pembroke and 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 over Montevallo.
