Baylor, McCallie prep for match play

The Ryder Cup golf showdown pitting a team from America versus a team from Europe in a match-play format begins in eight days.

The Chattanooga prep version is scheduled for today.

Baylor and McCallie will square off in their annual rivalry where 12 points are up for grabs in eight head-to-head matches and four best-ball matches this afternoon at Black Creek Club.

"It's nice that it coincides with the Baylor-McCallie football week, and it may be a nice way to start the pageantry of the rivalry," McCallie golf coach Tony Meyers said. "What we've always wanted to do is play one another and make it a fun event. In years past, Baylor had our number, sometimes decisively, so we chose to go to match play.

"It's one of those fun things to take our minds off what's going to happen next week."

The Division II East/Middle Regional will be held Monday at Bear Trace at Tims Ford, and spots in the state championship will be on the line.

"It's a change of pace with a different format," Baylor coach Gary Partrick said. "The season really only comes down to one day -- the region tournament. Everything else is fine-tuning your game."

Baylor has topped McCallie in the two tournaments in which both participated, the Matt Cunningham Baylor Preview and the City Prep Championship.

Those were stroke-play events. This is match play.

"The first team to six and half points wins," Partrick said. "They won last year. We won the two previous years."
