NASHVILLE - Law enforcement agencies in Hamilton County are getting $380,000 in state-administered federal highway safety grants.

Gov. Bill Haslam and state Transportation Commissioner John Schroer announced today that more than $18.1 million in funds are going to law enforcement statewide through the Governor's Highway Safety Office. The goal is saving lives and reducing injuries on state roads through innovation, coordination and program support in partnership with numerous public and private organizations.

Locally, Hamilton County District Attorney Bill Cox's office is getting a $138,484 grant to aid prosecutions of drunk drivers.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office was awarded two grants totaling almost $124,000. One is a $75,000 grant for the office's Safe Journey program, which seeks to promote vehicle occupant protection and the correct use of child car seats through public and professional education and awareness.

The second Hamilton County grant of $49,848 is for its Remove Intoxicated and Impaired Drivers program.

Chattanooga police's aggressive-driving enforcement program is getting $49,320.

Other law enforcement agency grants include $24,965 for the Soddy-Daisy Police Department's "alcohol saturation" roadside sobriety checkpoints.

A $14,994 DUI grant is going to Red Bank police, while Lookout Mountain, East Ridge and Collegedale police are getting $5,000 grants each for their high visibility traffic enforcement campaigns.
