Hamilton County Young Republicans Chairman George Jackson announced this morning he will run for the District 2 City Council seat now held by Sally Robinson.

"I figured it's time to stop complaining at the kitchen table about the city's problems," he said. "It's time to get up and start doing something about them."

First elected in 2001, Robinson, 71, said Tuesday she won't run for a another term in order to focus on her real estate brokerage. Jackson is the first person to publicly seek her seat.

Jackson, 28, serves as a corporal for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. Before beginning his career in law enforcement, he was an agent for Liberty National Insurance and the director of public relations at Tennessee Temple University.

A news release issued by Jackson said he'll use his criminal justice experience to help address the city's gang "problem."

City Council races are nonpartisan. District 2 includes North Chattanooga, Riverview, Lupton City, Stuart Heights and parts of Hixson.

The election is set for March 2013.
