UTC holding pep rally held Friday at Miller Plaza

A public pep rally for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team was held Friday at Miller Plaza, in advance of the Mocs' homecoming game Saturday evening against longtime Southern Conference power Appalachian State. The UTC marching band, cheerleaders, Sugar Mocs and mascot Scrappy will join coach Russ Huesman and some of the players at the event hosted by the River City Company. Also for UTC this weekend, the volleyball team hosts Appalachian at 6 this evening and Western Carolina on Saturday, the women's soccer team begins SoCon play with games tonight at Davidson and Sunday at Georgia Southern and the women's golfers play today through Sunday in the rugged Mason Rudolph Women's Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

Volleyball

• Union College improved to 4-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play and 6-8 overall with a 3-0 volleyball win Thursday at Tennessee Wesleyan. TWC is 4-3 overall, 1-3 in the league.

• The Tennessee Temple University volleyball team lost 26-24, 25-15, 18-25, 25-18 to Toccoa Falls on Thursday, dropping the Lady Crusaders to 5-11. The Temple men's soccer team lost 10-0 in a makeup game Wednesday at Martin Methodist.

Soccer

• Sewanee's annual Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational men's soccer tournament honoring the program's most famous alumnus has pulled in Covenant College as a co-host. Sewanee will host LaGrange while Greenville (Ill.) plays at Covenant at 7 EDT tonight, and they will switch opponents for games at the same time Saturday. Rote will be an honorary co-coach for Sewanee on Saturday, after vice chancellor Dr. John McCardell fulfills that role Friday.
