Polk County teams sweep 5-A/AA golf titles

Polk County golf coach Jason Adams needed two trips to the parking lot to carry everything he accumulated in his cart Monday afternoon at the District 5-A/AA tournament at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay.

He carried two trophies on the first walk to his car.

His Wildcats and Lady Wildcats won the team competitions, and Polk senior Lydia Triplett was the girls' medalist with Lauren Passmore adding a career-low 91.

"It's a good day for Polk County golf," Adams said. "We accomplished a goal we set out to do at the beginning of the year of winning districts."

The Wildcats combined to shoot 319 to top McMinn Central by eight shots and third-place Sequoyah by nine. Those teams also will go to the Region 3 tournament next Monday at Valleybrook.

McMinn Central sophomore Paul Houk was the medalist with a 1-over-par 73, and Sequoyah's Ben Brackett was the runner-up at 76.

District 6 moves on

The District 6-A/AA tournament at Moccasin Bend lacked drama from the start because all who played knew they would advance to the Region 3 event.

But Peyton Maxwell of Arts and Sciences and Justin Miller of East Hamilton both signed for 6-over 78s, forcing a sudden-death playoff for the boys' medalist honor. Maxwell won on the first hole.

East Hamilton won the team title for a third straight year with a 327, which topped Hixson by five shots and CSAS by 80 strokes.

All three teams, plus Lori Lyles of CSAS, will play next Monday.

"It has a different feeling knowing that everybody is going on," Hurricanes coach Jeff Stetzler said. "It felt like a practice round for region."

McCallie, Baylor win

McCallie won the Division II East/Middle Region boys' championship Monday with a 13-over 297, and Baylor finished fourth at 311 in the tournament at Bear Trace at Tims Ford.

McCallie senior Andrew Weathers was the medalist with a 1-under 70, one stroke better than teammate Patrick McDonald. Baylor senior Mikey Feher was third at 72.

Baylor won the girls' team title at 8-over 150 with Blakesly Warren the top individual at 72.

GPS will be represented at the state tournament by Mary Alice Manuel and Emily Blake, who qualified as individuals.

"Advancing to state is first and foremost," McCallie coach Tony Meyers said. "Then late I knew it was a two-team race with BGA. I knew Andrew wouldn't triple [bogey] the last hole."
