Former Red Bank football coach Tim Daniels is scheduled to undergo open-heart surgery this morning.
Daniels, who resigned the Red Bank post following the 2011 season, has been working this season for Baylor coach Phil Massey as the Red Raiders' offensive line coach.
Daniels reportedly went to the doctor to check on an irregular heartbeat, and it was discovered that he had an enlarged aorta. He was to have a heart catheter put in Monday afternoon before today's surgery.
"He said it was three times the normal size, that he was a walking time bomb," Massey said. "I'm glad it was something they found."
Daniels is expected to be in the cardiac intensive care unit for at least two days but might be released from the hospital by the weekend.
He was Red Bank's head coach from 2002-2012 and compiled a record of 77-40 for the Lions. They had three 12-1 seasons during his tenure -- 2006, 2007 and 2009. They also played in 17 postseason games, advancing to the quarterfinals three times and posting a 9-8 record.
Bo Bohannon, who helped the Red Raiders some last year, will help Baylor with the offensive line the rest of the season.
Irish's Ballard out
Freshman running back Ricky Ballard will be confined to the sideline Friday when Notre Dame hosts Signal Mountain with the District 7-AA lead at stake.
Coming off a 200-yard rushing performance against Lookout Valley last week, Ballard will miss the Signal game with a Grade 2 AC joint separation, according to a text-message response from Irish coach Charles Fant.
