UTC's Tydingco SoCon player of week

Friday, January 1, 1904

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior first baseman Kasey Tydingco is the Southern Conference softball player of the week after batting .600 with a 1.700 slugging percentage in four games, including a league sweep at Western Carolina. She had three home runs, two doubles, a single, three walks and nine RBIs plus 33 putouts on defense. She leads the Lady Mocs with a .371 batting average and four homers and has 25 RBIs.

• Shortstop Gabby Alcantar had three hits in each game and Brooke Meadows pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the second as Huntingdon College won 9-2 and 12-0 in Great South softball Monday at Covenant. Jenni Jobe was 3-for-4, Kendall Whann was 2-for-3 and Courtney Wagoner was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the first game for Covenant (2-20, 1-5).

Golf

• Led by senior Steven Fox's 6-under-par 138 and Davis Bunn's 140, the UTC men's golf team is fourth at even-par 576 after the first two rounds of the 14-team BancorpSouth Intercollegiate tournament at Madison, Miss. Mississippi State at 560 leads by 14 strokes over Southeastern Louisiana and by 15 over Central Arkansas. Fox is tied for second after his two 69s, and Bunn is fifth while teammate Chris Robb is shares 26th at 148. The Mocs' Benni Weilguni and Liam Johnston are at 152 and 153.

• Chattanooga resident Pier Morgan made his 12th hole-in-one Saturday, on No. 12 at Valleybrook, but that wasn't the most remarkable thing about his round. The usual par-71 course was playing that day as a par-69 -- with two holes shortened because of wet conditions - and Morgan shot a 67. He's 78 years old, so that was 11 shots below his age, and best he could remember his best previous round at Valleybrook, his home course, was "probably a 66." He has shot under his age before, but Saturday's round was the biggest gap, he said. He noted that driving usually is the best part of his game -- "I keep it in play most of the time," said - but added that Saturday "my chipping was good, and my putting. I've been putting real good the last two or three times I've played. And my irons aren't great, but they were working that day." No. 12 was the par-4 temporarily a par-3, so his ace covered 147 yards.
