Contra dance is Steam-powered

A new contra dance band will play from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the Folk School of Chattanooga. Local musicians are invited to sit on four tunes, provided they do their homework.

Steam -- composed of Dave Firestine and Claire Jamieson Zucker from Arizona and Alice Boyle and Robert Rosenberg from Kansas -- plays a diverse repertoire of Irish, old-time, French-Canadian, New England and modern tunes.

Sunday's event will feature jamming in every room of the Folk School, 1800 Rossville Ave., plus dancing in the dance hall. All ages are welcome, and those attending are invited to bring snacks to share.

Following the custom of the legendary Carp Camp of Winfield, Kan., Firestine has assigned "homework."

"In other words," says Folk School Executive Director Christie Burns, "four delicious tunes for us to learn before he gets here, and then we'll all be able to play them together with the band." Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. A link to the homework tunes can be found at www.ChattanoogaFolk.com. For more information, call 423-827-8906.
