Chattanooga police arrest man in Main Street slaying

Friday, January 1, 1904

An argument over a woman led to the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man early Tuesday morning, Chattanooga police said.

Andrew Wilson Jr., 28, told police he fired his .45-caliber Sig-Sauer nine times at 28-year-old Desmond McClure outside an event hall at 2510 E. Main St.

Wilson, arrested Friday, said McClure tried to shoot him first, pulling the trigger three times on a .357-caliber revolver without triggering a shot.

The gun fired the fourth and fifth times, according to a police affidavit.

Immediately after the shooting, Wilson said, he took McClure's gun and jumped into a car. He threw the gun out at Dodson Avenue and East Main Street. Police were unable to locate the weapon, according to the report.

The shooting took place in a parking lot outside a building where a bachelor party was being held.

Two other men, 19-year-old Ricky Rogers and 29-year-old Andrew Wright, also were involved in the argument.

"Some witnesses reported that the victim had attempted to shoot Ricky Rogers with a long revolver when Andrew Wilson opened fire on the victim, killing him. However, investigators were unable to confirm that Andrew Wilson Jr. shot the victim in self-defense," the affidavit states.

McClure's criminal record contains only minor charges.

Rogers was charged after 18-year-old Elijah Flemming was shot in May just outside the Eastdale Recreation Center. Rogers was convicted of facilitation to commit aggravated assault and received a three-year suspended sentence.

Wilson has pending charges for reselling drugs and criminal conspiracy stemming from a December arrest. He now faces new charges of criminal homicide and tampering with evidence.

As of Friday afternoon, he remained at the Hamilton County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

His next court date is set for April 11 before Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge David Bales.
