Police cited a 29-year-old Chattanooga man for violating driver's license laws and not having proof of insurance after he was involved in a crash that sent a dozen people to the hospital Monday.

Ramirez Guzman also was cited for running a red light, police said.

The crash at the intersection of Hickory Valley and Standifer Gap roads happened around 8:15 a.m.

Witnesses told police that a white van, driven by Guzman and headed south on Hickory Valley Road, ran a red light and collided with a white passenger van operated by Serenity Adult Day Care and headed east on Standifer Gap Road.

The day care center van flipped on its side, trapping the driver and passengers.

Chattanooga Fire Department personnel responded. Firefighters first stabilized the vehicle, according to Battalion Chief Frederick Blake, before they opened the back doors and got some of the victims out.

The victims toward the front of the van still were trapped, and firefighters had to cut away the front windshield and part of the top of the van to release them, Blake said.

Hamilton County Emergency Medical Services workers placed the victims on backboards as they were removed.

Only four of the vehicle's occupants suffered injuries, and those were minor, but all passengers were taken to local hospitals as a precautionary measure.

Six ambulances were used to take the driver and 11 passengers to Erlanger hospital, Erlanger East and Parkridge Medical Center, a police news release states.

Guzman's van had three occupants, and no one reported being injured.

No information on the condition of the injured was available late Monday.
