5-at-10: Masters trek begins, possible new radio adventure, where does Geno rank

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

We're picking up stakes and taking the big red sled and TFP golf ace David Uchiyama to Augusta shortly, so we're going to be brief. We'll reconvene later this after when we get in our seat in the press building.

Masters contest

OK gang, inspired by the NCAA tournament bracket win - and the alleged extra entertainment in our pocket - we're offering prizes for first and second of this year's Mastering the Masterful Masters Master List challenge. (Side note: If we could get a title sponsor for this contest, we'd pick MasterLock for obvious reasons. Plus, we love those old commercials where they shoot the lock. Not sure what the lock said or did, but we're sure he got what he deserved. Side note about the side note: When a lock gets shot, do the lock cops on the radio call in and say, "Lock Down. Lock Down.")

The rules are simple: Pick five golfers and we'll take your best four finishers. You get points for where they place (first = 1 point; 11th = 11 points) and the two lowest scores win.

Here are the entries so far, with a partial list from the host (more to come):

Can't Live Without My Radio

What's the best song with the word radio in the title? The LL Cool J classic "Can't Live Without My Radio" is in the discussion. So is "Video Killed the Radio Star." What's your pick?

And yes, Spy this has a point.

This coming up Monday, David Paschall and the blockhead TFP sports editor are going to take a two-week swing guest hosting the 1-3 p.m. time slot on ESPN Radio 105.1 FM here in town. It was an interesting opportunity and with Paschall's never-ending knowledge of college football and with our the water-towered-size melon filled with rivers of useless knowledge, we thought it would be a kick to give it a shot for a couple of weeks.

We've got a few guests in the work, but this may sound crazy, we're having a tough time picking a name for the show. We may only do this for a couple of weeks - or maybe it could grow into something more, who knows - but we're going to need a show name better than "Paschall and the blockhead TFP sports editor." Who's got any ideas?

Feel free to swing by and give us a listen starting Monday at 1 p.m. It don't cost nothing. Plus, feel free to call in at 648-1051. We're pretty sure there will be a steady stream of stuff to discuss the next couple of weeks. The Masters. Spring Football. Heck, we're two weeks from tomorrow from the NFL Draft. We love the draft - in print and on the radio - and you know this.

UConn women rolls

Louisville's dream 2013 - Sugar Bowl win over Florida, keeping coach Charlie Strong, the men's basketball title - finally hit a speed bump. It was more like a pot hole the size of Sale Creek.

The UConn Huskies thumped Louisville in the women's NCAA title game, ending the Cards' memorable and magical run with a 93-60 rout.

It's the eighth title in the last 18 seasons for UConn and head coach Geno Auriemma, and there appears to be more on the horizon, considering the best player in the Final Four this year was Huskies freshman Breanna Stewart and the bulk of this year's team returns.

Auriemma now has as many titles as University of Tennessee legend Pat Summitt. For her part, always the leader and legend with class in every situation, Summitt released the following statement: "Congratulations to Geno Auriemma and the Connecticut Huskies on a remarkable season and an eighth national title," Summitt said in a statement released by her son, Tyler. "Geno is a proven champion and a leader in our game. My best to him, his family, his team and staff."

OK, this is tough to ask, but we must: Is Geno a better coach than Pat Summitt? Discuss.

This and that

- Your Atlanta Braves are 7-1. And as impressive as that sounds, it's either magic or hollow. Consider the following: The Braves are rolling to their best start since 2007 despite Brian McCann in street clothes, Jason Heyward hitting 83 points better than that weird guy in your office who you know, Know, KNOW ate boogers as a little kid, BJ Upton hitting just 20 points better than Heyward, Freddie Freeman on the DL, and Danny str-Uggla being Danny str-Uggla. FE to the C knows the drill - it's time for these Braves to embrace their old-school Oakland Raiders. Just win baby. And keep hitting Justin Upton (.400 average/1.100 slugging percentage) and Evan "El Oso Blanco" Gattis (.368) in the middle of the lineup and handing the ball to Craig Kimbrel with a ninth-inning lead.

- In the mornings, we bounce around the interweb for extra details and such to produce as entertaining 5-at-10 as we can. We came across this story about former G-n-R front man Axl Rose. Sweet buckets of Sweet Child o' Mine, who's dressing him and what's that haircut? That photo makes Axl - who was a rock bad boy at one time - look like the lost love child of Liberace and Dianne Wiest. Next thing you know, you're going to try to tell me that Uncle Luke Skywalker (aka Luther Campbell) from rap bad boys 2 Live Crew is coaching youth sports. Wait, what?!?!?!

photo Charles Barkley (AP Photo/Elise Amendola, File)

- There's a chain of sports bars known as Bikinis Sports Bar & Grill in Texas and the owner of that company has copyrighted the phrase "Breastaurant." Add this to the list of things like the hard plastic caps on shoelaces and the clip you put on a baby's pacifier and the baby's shirt so it doesn't fall on the ground that are million-dollar ideas that we could have thought of first.

- We're big Charles Barkley fans. In fact, he's the complete opposite of TURRRR-ible. This photo however is just plain wrong. C'mon Chuck. That said, it did bring back the memorable scene of Chris Farley in "Tommy Boy"... fat guy in a little coat. Side note: Tommy Boy is extremely underrated.

Today's question(s)

We've littered a few questions throughout today's entry and we're interested in your responses to them:

A show name for the two-week radio run for Paschall and the blockhead TFP sports editor on ESPN 105.1 FM?

Geno or Pat, who you got?

The Masters contest, are you in?

We're dealing with a lot of stuff.... "OK, well, uh... candlesticks always make a nice gift, and uh, maybe you could find out where she's registered and maybe a place-setting or maybe a silverware pattern. OK, let's get two."
