ROME, Ga. - Powerful storms peeled the roof from a store, toppled a tree onto a home and knocked out power to thousands of residents.

By 3 a.m. Friday, Georgia Power said 4,700 customers were without power statewide in the wake of the storms that struck the state Thursday afternoon and evening.

In the northwest Georgia city of Rome, high winds tore the metal roof off a hardware store, scattering its pieces across nearby yards.

WSB-TV reports that a tree fell on a home in Lumpkin County in north Georgia, trapping a woman in her basement. Authorities say she escaped major injuries and was rescued from the home.

National Weather Service forecasters said possible tornadoes had been spotted in Tallapoosa and other areas in the region, and crews were planning to survey damage today.
