UTC women lead SoCon golf event

With Emily McLennan and Agathe Sauzon sharing second place individually at 2-over-par 146, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga leads the Southern Conference women's golf tournament by nine strokes at 597 at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C., with one round to play. UNC Greensboro is second with Furman third at 610. UTC's and Porsche Campbell is tied for 10th at 152, and Isabella Loza and Jordan Britt are at 155 and 157. UTC's 297 was the best first-round score in the event since Furman's 294 in 2008.

• Lee University placed three golfers on the 10-member All-Southern States Athletic Conference men's team -- Matt Emery, Hunter Vest and Taylor Davis -- and then opened the league tournament Monday with a first-place 282 at Legoon Park in Montgomery, Ala. Emery shot a 3-under-par 69 to tie for second place three shots behind Coastal Georgia's Chase Miller from Dalton High School -- another All-SSAC player along with teammate Hunter Cornelius from Heritage High. Lee's Florian Loutre and JB Eksteen are tied for fifth at 70 with Peyton Sliger tied for 11th with Cornelius at 73, and Vest shot a 75.

• Sewanee freshman Emily Javadi from Chattanooga is tied for first place in the Bluegrass Spring Classic women's golf tournament at Lexington, Ky., after shooting a 75 in the first round Monday. The Tigers are seventh as a team, with Alison Eleey tied for 19th at 85.

Softball

• Kentucky freshman Kelsey Nunley from Soddy-Daisy was chosen the Southeastern Conference softball pitcher of the week after setting a Wildcats record with her 20th win of the season Saturday, 4-2 against third-ranked Florida, and pitching 42/3 innings of strong relief Sunday. Nunley (20-4) was 3-0 in her 252/3 innings for the week, with 15 strikeouts.

• Fourth-year starting catcher Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah High School completed her Carson-Newman home career Saturday by going 1-for-2 with an RBI in the first game and hitting a three-run double in the second as the Lady Eagles beat Brevard 9-0 and 7-6 in eight innings. That gave her 159 collegiate RBIs to go with a .371 batting average and 19 home runs. Another Ooltewah alumna, Sara Kelley, was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the opener, and Ooltewah's Jessica Morgan scored twice in each game. Freshman Kaitie Sims from Baylor got both pitching wins but dropped to 18-5 with a 1-0 loss Sunday at Coker. Carson-Newman (30-16) then won 3-0 with an RBI and a run apiece from Kelley and Shoemake. Kelley was 2-for-2 in the loss.

• Tennessee Temple won 4-3 and lost 8-3 to Bryan in college softball Monday at Warner Park. Megan Roysden was the winning pitcher in the first game for the Lady Crusaders (19-14), as Kayla Phillips hit a three-run double in the fifth inning and Beth Boling went 3-for-3 and scored twice. Carley Daniel was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in game two. For Bryan (18-22), Alexsa Valdes went 2-for-4 in each game, and Christine Marino, Rachel Kirby and Taylor Yates matched that while Katie Vaughn was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in game two. Marino had two RBIs. Rebecca James was 2-for-3 in the Lady Lions' loss.

Auto Racing

• Rick Hixson edged Riley Hickman both Friday night at Boyd's Speedway and Saturday at Cleveland Speedway for Steel-head Limited Late Model racing victories. Dewayne Powell, Kevin Gibson and Mike Tinker completed the top five at Boyd's; Bobby Mayse, Gibson and John Ownbey were third through fifth at Cleveland. Also at Boyd's, Jason Welshan won in Crate Late Model with Grayson York second and Tanner Works third; Booger Brooks and Dallas Brooks won in A-Hobby and B-Hobby with Beau Bice and Ronnie Kerr their runners-up; and Daniel Burnette won again in FWD. The SRRS Super Late Models will be at Boyd's for a $3,000-to-win 40-lapper this Friday. Saturday at Cleveland, Craig Burrows won the Crate race with Jimmy Elliott and Lamar Scoggins second and third, and Glen Seaton III won in A-Hobby, Jason Brown in B-Hobby, Nick Perry in Pony and Burnette in FWD.

• Joshua Powell of Trenton won the $1,500 top Super Pro prize Saturday at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip with a 5.95-second run on a 5.95 dial in a 350-small-block Chevy-powered dragster. Taylor Sweeton was second in a Ron Lane-owned Chevy-powered dragster, and Lane won the Heads-Up radial tire class with a 5.49 in his 1972 Datsun 240Z; Jarred Hicks was second. Melvin Croft won the Foot Brake class in a '69 Plymouth Valiant with Mike Griep second, and Jesse Daniel from Loganville, Ga., won in Junior Dragster with Chloe Keener of Dunlap second.
