GPS, McCallie cut 'Footloose'

Girls Preparatory School and McCallie School will cut loose with the musical "Footloose" this weekend in the GPS Frierson Theatre, 205 Island Ave.

The stage version of the musical, nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Original Score, includes the songs "Somebody's Eyes," "Holding Out for a Hero," "Let's Hear it for the Boy" and "Almost Paradise," in addition to the title song.

The joint production by the two schools involves 11 students in featured roles and another 22 in the chorus and dance crew. Two GPS students who play clarinet and violin are sitting in with a group of professional musicians in the rock 'n' roll pit orchestra. The production is directed by GPS drama teacher Catherine Bolden.

Performances start at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21. Tickets -- $12 for front section and $8 for back -- will be on sale in the theater lobby 90 minutes before each performance. Tickets may not be reserved by phone or email.
