Sam Taylor extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff triple and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team went on andwon 2-1 on Wednesday at Tennessee Tech. Taylor ended up 2-for-3 and scored the game's first run. After TTU tied it, Anyssa Robles' RBI single in the third put the Lady Mocs back ahead. Winning pitcher Taylor Deason, who allowed six hits and one walk, gave up an unearned run in the first inning, then pitched six shutout innings to earn her team-leading 16th pitching win. She struck out four.

Golf

• Led by Florian Loutre and Matt Emery, Lee University shot a final-round 285 and completed a wire-to-wire Southern States Athletic Conference men's golf championship Thursday at Lagoon Park at Montgomery, Ala. The Flames ended the three-day tournament at 851 with runner-up Faulkner University second at 855. Loutre was medalist with a 9-under-par 207. Emery finished in a three-way tie for second at 212. Hunter Vest (217), JB Eksteen (220), and Peyton Sliger (224) finished tied for eighth, 15th and 23rd for the Flames, which led by six strokes after Tuesday's round. Third-place College of Coastal Georgia was led by Chase Miller from Dalton High School. He was the leading individual after each of the first two rounds, but shot a third-round 79 and ended up tied for fifth at 215. Teammate Hunter Cornelius from Heritage High equaled Vest in eighth place.

• Sewanee freshman Emily Javadi from Chattanooga finished second at 153, one stroke behind the medalist from Cumberland University, in the Bluegrass Spring Classic that ended Tuesday at Lexington, Ky. Sewanee's Alison Eleey finished 18th.

• Austin Peay freshman Jessica Cathey from Soddy-Daisy High School was the Ohio Valley Conference female golfer of the week for her play in three dual matches over the weekend, culminating in a 71 Monday against Belmont that beat the next best score by five strokes. She had a 32 on the back nine. Cathey had the third best score of the two teams in Sunday's rain-plagued match against Tennessee State.

Baseball

• The Sewanee baseball team won 15-0 and 15-4 Tuesday at Johnson University in Knoxville, giving the Tigers (12-20) six wins in seven games. Michael Walker homered and doubled among four hits and batted in six runs in the opener, when Blake Williams was 4-for-4 and scored four runs, Allen Thigpen had three RBIs and pitcher Lee Schurlknight allowed one hit in his four innings. Jacob Walker was 3-for-3 and matched Jack Rogers and Ben Clune with three RBIs apiece in game two.

BASKETBALL

Dade County High School senior Cole Birchfield signed scholarship papers with Division II Newberry College in South Carolina Wednesday, according to Dade coach Glen Hicks. Birchfield, a member of the Times Free Press Best of Preps all-star team, averaged 25.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, four assists and three steals per game for the fast-paced Wolverines this year. "They play up-tempo like we do and that's what Cole liked," Hicks said. "Coach Dave Davis really likes him. They shoot a lot of 3-pointers and Cole can really shoot it."

Track & Field

• Lee senior Mike Walker from Red Bank High School and sophomore Cayce Bryan from Las Vegas were the SSAC outdoor track and field athletes of the week for their performances last weekend at the Sea Rays Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee. Walker set a Lee record and qualified for the NAIA national meet with his eighth-place 9:22.47 in the 3000-meter steeplechase dominated by NCAA Division I runners. Bryan improved her NAIA qualifying time from two weeks earlier by setting a school record with a 12th-place 2:13.52 in the 800. She also was on the eighth-place 4x800 relay team that qualified for the nationals.

Rowing

• Five Chattanooga Junior Rowing boats reached finals in the Dogwood Regatta at Oak Ridge last weekend. CJR's Raegan Johnson, Gentry Whittaker, Lauren Simpson and Susan Zeglen won the junior women's quad, and Quinn Nash, Connor Nash, David May and Joe Garner were a close second to Charlotte Youth Rowing in junior men's quad. Tanner Eaton reached finals in junior men's single and, with Sean Melvin, in junior men's double scull, and Madeleine Fox and Aubrey Gardin were second in women's junior lightweight double.
