Bridge demolition to close highway

Friday, January 1, 1904

A portion of Signal Mountain Road near the Dayton Boulevard intersection will be closed between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, according to Tennessee Department of Transportation officials.

TDOT contract crews will demolish the bridge on the existing northbound exit ramp to Signal Mountain Road, which passes over the road.

Workers will take apart the bridge in pieces, a news release states. The road beneath will be protected with mats during this work.

Once the bridge is removed, the contractor will set a portable barrier rail to close the inside lanes to allow for construction of the foundations for a new bridge.

During the closures, traffic will follow a marked detour route, and Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers will assist with traffic control.

Inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances could delay this work.

The project is part of the $104 million overhaul of U.S. 27 from the Olgiati Bridge over the Tennessee River to Signal Mountain Road, or state Route 8.

The estimated completion date for the entire project is Dec. 21, 2014.
