Weather, Barons chill Lookouts in 3-0 defeat

Friday, January 1, 1904

The weather turned cold Friday night at AT&T Field, and so did the bats for the Chattanooga Lookouts.

After hitting at least one home run in three consecutive games, the Lookouts were held to five singles in a 3-0 loss to Birmingham. The home team never had a runner advance to third base.

Birmingham took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Michael Blanke's two-out single to left field scored Brandon Short, who had reached on a one-out double to left. It remained 1-0 until the eighth inning, when Marcus Semien led off with a walk and scored on Dan Black's two-out single to right.

The Barons added insurance in the ninth when Blanke led off with a single to center and Cody Puckett followed with an RBI double to left.

Stephen McCray, Kevin Vance, Ryan Kussmaul and Taylor Thompson combined on the shutout for Birmingham (9-6). Despite the defeat, the Lookouts (6-9) claimed their first series of the season three games to two.

The chill affected the AT&T crowd of 3,461, which was the second smallest of the season.

Chattanooga opens a five-game series tonight in Jacksonville. Zach Lee, who is 2-0 with a 1.06 earned run average, is scheduled to start on the mound for the Lookouts.
