Racing blamed in death of Georgia teen

MACON, Ga. — Authorities say a youth is dead in middle Georgia after a driver lost control and crashed while racing in Houston County.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office says 17-year-old Colten Joseph Winkler of Perry was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle that wrecked early Sunday. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Authorities identify the driver as 44-year-old Danny Ray Wheeler of Perry. He was seriously injured and faces several charges in the wreck.

Sheriff’s officials say Wheeler left a party at his home and began racing another driver. A third person in Ford Mustang driven by Wheeler also was injured.
