The Boynton Lions Club’s annual fundraising effort is underway. Members are taking advance orders for Vidalia onions, and a pickup day will be scheduled at the end of the month at Boynton United Methodist Church.

Cost is $5 for a 5-pound bag, $10 for a 10-pound bag or $20 for a $25-pound bag.

According to club president Richmond Blackwell, buyers may send a 50 percent deposit with their name and a phone number or email to Boynton Lions Club, 3179 Pine Grove Road, Ringgold, GA 30736. Orders may be placed by phone by calling 423-834-2798.

“Pre-orders will be notified by phone or email where and when to pick up,” Blackwell said. “Balance of cost must be paid upon pickup. If onions are not picked up, the deposit will be considered a donation to the Lions Club, and onions will be sold.”

Fundraising chairman Jim Cosper said extra onions also will be sold at various locations around town.

“As soon as we know for sure, we will put the word out on when we will have them available for pickup,” he said.

Proceeds from the fundraiser are used for various club projects, including assistance with eyeglasses and other sight needs for those in the community, as well as care and maintenance of Dailey Hill Cemetery.

The club is accepting donations from friends and relatives of those interred at the cemetery to assist with the costs of mowing and upkeep.

Free vision tests will be offered during the 1890s Day Jamboree on May 24-25 to assess those who may need sight services from the club.
