Elite runner Sony Michel commits to Georgia

On a day when elite college football players continued getting selected in the NFL draft, the University of Georgia landed one of the nation's top high-school talents.

Sony Michel, the nation's No. 2 running back and No. 5 overall prospect in the 2014 signing class according to, committed Friday to the Bulldogs. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder from Plantation, Fla., made his announcement on ESPNU.

Should Michel stay true to his nonbinding pledge, he would be a freshman at Georgia when current Bulldogs tailbacks Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall are juniors.

"Those two running backs gave me the itch to go to Georgia in the first place," Michel told reporters after his announcement. "I feel like I can go in there and compete. I want to earn my spot, because I don't want anything given to me. I just go out there and compete. I feel like my whole mindset is to dominate."

According to the Miami Herald, Michel rushed for 1,264 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior last season after missing his sophomore year with a torn ACL. He burst on the scene as an eighth-grader, rushing for 1,825 yards and 18 scores.

Michel picked the Bulldogs over scholarship offers from Florida, Florida State, Miami and Notre Dame.
