Evan Alfano is Milligan's male athlete of year

Senior swimmer and team captain Evan Alfano from Chattanooga and Notre Dame High School was honored Thursday as the outstanding male athlete of the year for Milligan College. It goes annually to a student who "demonstrates excellence in academic, athletics, social and spiritual participation in the Milligan Community," according to the awards release. Alfano is an NAIA Academic All-American who holds four school individual records and six with relay teams and has qualified four times for the national meet with one top-five finish and another top-10.

Softball

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball doubleheader scheduled for Saturday against Samford was rained out. The teams will try to play two games today, the first beginning at noon. The Lady Mocs' three seniors will be honored if the games are played. UTC is scheduled to play Tuesday at Alabama-Birmingham and will end the regular season Saturday and Sunday at Elon.

• Cleveland State lost 4-3 and won 9-0 at Southwest Tennessee in a TCCAA softball doubleheader Friday. Sydney Howell's solo homer and two three-run blasts by Emily Huston led the visiting Lady Cougars (18-25, 13-20) behind Ida Watson's two-hit pitching in game two. Maura Ditto doubled in a run and scored the other two in the series opener.

Lacrosse

• Top-seeded Sewanee defeated Berry 15-6 in the soggy semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association women's lacrosse tournament Saturday at Sewanee. Ellie Murphy scored five goals and Olivia Vietor added three for the host Tigers (12-6), who play second seed Centre today at 11 a.m. CDT for the championship. Brita Brudvig and Sally Anne Greenwood had two goals each, Chelsea Staunton had two assists and Sammy Strasburger made seven saves for Sewanee, which outshot the Vikings 31-19. In the other semifinal, Chattanooga's Sarah Mastey from GPS scored three of the first four goals of the match and Centre (10-6) went on to beat Millsaps 13-6. Annie Jonakin and Audrey Powers are other area starters for the Colonels.

Track & Field

• Sewanee sophomore Sally Warm from Baylor School won the women's long jump at 5.47 meters Friday and the triple jump at 11.14 Saturday in the SAA outdoor track and field meet at Sewanee. Teammate Willow Smith was second to Centre's Emily Akin in the 10,000-meter run, and Sewanee freshman Amiel Emerson was second in the men's 800. Hudson Robb was fifth in the 5000 and Clay Bond was sixth in the 1500.

Golf

• Sewanee's Emily Javadi is first individually at 150 and fellow Baylor alumna Alyssa Brown of first-place Centre is third at 153 after two rounds of the SAA women's golf tournament at Birmingham's Highland Park course, and Sewanee's Alison Eleey is tied for fifth at 156 with Jenna King 16th at 163. Signal Mountain graduate Sarah Dolmovich of Birmingham-Southern also shares fifth, while teammate Jesse Lawley is second at 152. BSC is at 628, two strokes behind Centre. Then come Rhodes at 652 and Sewanee at 659 in the eight-team field.

Baseball

• The Gulf South Conference baseball tournament runs Thursday through Monday week at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, and tickets cost $8. The price is $5 for seniors, military personnel and college students with IDs and for ages 6-15. Children 5 and under get in free, and so do youth league baseball and softball players wearing their team jerseys and attending with adults. Wednesday, the eight GSC teams will conduct clinics with 16 area youth teams throughout Hamilton County. The GSC is where Lee University will belong as it moves to NCAA Division II this summer. One GSC team that will play this week, Delta State, is ranked No. 1 in the nation, while Alabama-Huntsville and West Florida are 13th and 19th. The league has had six national champions, most recently West Florida in 2011, and 254 major league draft picks. Seven GSC alumni are in the big leagues now.

Running

• Ryan Shrum of Chattanooga won the National Cornbread Festival 5k road race Saturday in South Pittsburg by more than two minutes. Shrum, the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon runner-up last November, finished the 3.1-mile race in 18 minutes, 35 seconds, compared to 20:37 for second-place and fellow 45-year-old Eric Fritz and 20:42 for 14-year-old Jonah Devaney. Allie Anderson was the first female and 10th overall in 22:50, 14 seconds ahead of Caroline Kohl. Both also are 14.

Football

• Vanderbilt coach James Franklin will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. New UTC vice chancellor and athletic director David Blackburn will be the May 6 speaker.
