Scoring first in baseball doesn't always guarantee victory, but those odds increase when it's a tie game that resumes in the eighth inning.
C.J. Retherford's one-out double into the left-field corner scored Brian Cavazos-Galvez from first base in the bottom of the eighth and propelled Chattanooga to a 5-4 win Saturday over the Jackson Generals at AT&T Field. The triumph was a completion of Friday night's contest that was halted by rain, and it required only 12 minutes.
"They should all be like that," a smiling Retherford said. "Obviously you want to win in regulation, but it's only if the time comes and you're in the right situation. A win is a win, and you will take every one of them."
In Saturday night's regularly scheduled game, Jackson obliterated the Lookouts 13-1. Abraham Almonte hit a solo home run to right-center during the third inning and had a bases-clearing triple to center to highlight a five-run fourth for the Generals.
Andres Santiago took the brunt of Almonte's wrath and allowed seven runs on six hits before failing to last four innings.
Retherford had a solo home run to left in the second inning Friday night and finished the two-day game 3-for-4 with three RBIs. His heroics stood up when Lookouts relief pitcher Yimi Garcia retired the Generals in order in the top of the ninth.
It was the first suspended-game victory for Jody Reed in his short stint as Lookouts manager.
"Even though there is a 24-hour time period, you have to treat it just like it was being played last night," Reed said. "It's the bottom of the eighth, and we've got two at-bats to their one. That's the approach you've got to take."
Rob Rasmussen (1-2, 4.18 ERA) is scheduled to start today's 2:15 game for the Lookouts, with Chance Ruffin (1-0, 3.00) scheduled for the Generals.
Magill promoted
Pitcher Matt Magill, who went 11-8 with a 3.75 ERA in 26 starts with the Lookouts last season, was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque and started Saturday night for Los Angeles against visiting Milwaukee.
