Mocs football practice report

Thursday, August 1, 2013

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team was at Scrappy Moore Field this morning long before the sun appeared on the horizon. The Mocs' second preseason practice began at 6:30 and the 28-period session ended around 9.

Here are some odds and ends from this morning:

Top play: Quarterback Jacob Huesman hit wideout Tommy Hudson for about a 40-yard touchdown. Huesman rolled to his right and Hudson, who beat All-SoCon cornerback Kadeem Wise on the play, caught the ball in stride down the sideline for the score.

Top players: Huesman, Hudson and fellow wideout Terrell Robinson all had good days for the offense. Defensively, the group was pretty solid across the board without any standout performances. There wasn't the slew of interceptions like there was Wednesday.

Quotable: "I prepared myself. I went to bed on time and set my alarm to wake up exactly at 5:45, which gave me enough time to get out here, get taped and eat a little breakfast. It was good. I like going early in the mornings. There's less heat. Everybody needs a little time to wake up, but after a while it comes natural." - defensive tackle Derrick Lott on dealing with the early start

A good sign: Safety D.J. Key (foot) was on the field and going through limited workouts after sitting out Wednesday.

A not so good sign: Defensive end Davis Tull (groin) sat out the last half of practice. He's recovering from a nagging injury and some soreness was expected, coach Russ Huesman said.

Up next: The Mocs will be back at Scrappy Friday morning at 6:30. It will be the players' first day with shoulder pads on after going helmets only the first two days.
