UTC golfer Jordan Britt opens with 80 in U.S. Women's Am

Chattanooga resident and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Jordan Britt is tied for 110th place after shooting an 80 in the first day of stroke-play qualifying Monday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Country Club of Charleston, S.C. Fifteen-year-old Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu had the day’s only sub-par round, a 2-under 69, in leading the bid for the 64-player match-play field decided after today’s 18 holes. Seven players share second place at 71. Vanderbilt player Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City is the only other Tennessean among the 156 participants and shot a 78 on Monday.

Auto Racing

* Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., passed Crossville’s Randy Weaver with four laps to go and won the 40-lap Ultimate series Super Late Model race Saturday night at North Georgia Speedway at Chatsworth. Marlar earned $4,000 for the victory. North Carolina’s Chris Ferguson, Floridian Ivedent Lloyd Jr. and Georgian Casey Roberts completed the top five. Johnny Cloer Jr. won the Limited Late Model Steelhead feature, Jason Welshan won in Crate Late Model, Mark Bishop was the Sportsman victor, Grag Brown won in Modified Hobby, Tony Walston prevailed in Econo Hobby, Grady Stokes was the Pony winner and Billy Callahan took the Mod Lites victory.

* Preston Elwell of Signal Mountain placed fifth out of 41 javelin throwers in the boys’ 17-18 age group at the AAU Junior Olympics this past weekend at Ypsilanti, Mich. Elwell is 16.

General

* A free concussion seminar is being held a week from tonight in the University Center auditorium at UTC, from 6:30 to 8. The program is sponsored by the Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Center (with support from Rawlings Sporting Goods), the Chattanooga Concussion Prevention Initative, the Chattanooga Area Brain Injury Association and the UTC Graduate Athletic Training Education Program and is for anyone interested in the prevention and handling of concussion injuries. That includes school and community coaches, parents and athletes. Light refreshments will be provided. Seating will be limited, so organizers ask that anyone interested reserve a seat by Friday by calling 615-936-0322.
