Church can spend its money as it sees fit, and more letters to the editors

Church can spend its money as it sees fit

Folks, please. Why don't you lay off the people who put up the crosses? It's their way of showing honor to the one they love, Jesus Christ.

Yes, $700,000 is a lot of money. So what? Let them spend theirs the way they please, and you do the same. Maybe you can win the lottery. Then what? Or maybe you could do some volunteer work. I hear Feed My Starving Children, a Christ-based organization getting nutrition to the world's children without regard to religion, is returning to Chattanooga at the end of September. Check into it.

Islam doesn't appear to be religion of peace

The month of fasting is over. Hopefully, the Muslims have become more righteous than before. During Ramadan they prayed, read the Quran and did good deeds. They surrendered to Allah!

Islam signifies total submission to the will and guidance of Allah. The religion took on the title of Islam because Allah decreed it. Some Muslims believe the meaning of Islam is "peace."

However, Islam has traditionally been translated as "total submission" or "surrender," not peace. Mohammad appealed to the tribes of his days to "become Muslims and surrender to Allah and you will be safe." Mohammad's use of the word Islam meant surrender within the context of military conquest not spiritual submission to Allah. They already believed in Allah.

In the beginning of Ramadan, David Cook interviewed some Muslims and quoted their responses: "It is a spiritual cleansing. Along with balking from food and drink Muslims also [try to] avoid quarreling, gossiping, lies, impure images, all things that constitute the junk food for the soul." And that "Islam is a peaceful religion."

If Islam is a peaceful religion, I wonder, why did the United States have to shut down its embassies in the Islamic states?

GOP isn't doing what's best for our country

It's interesting there have been so many letters about the dismissal of Drew Johnson. The Times Free Press is supposed to give us the information we need to conduct a civil society, not someone's personal agenda to berate the highest office in our country. I realize this is the heart of the Confederacy and there is lingering hatred for those in our duly elected government, but it's treasonous to have as your main goal in life to defeat our leader.

The right wing has done nothing since President Barack Obama's election to help this country get back on its feet after the devastation and destruction which occurred under the Bush-Cheney reign of incompetence and greed. The right wing leader, Mitch McConnell, stated on Day 1 that his main goal was to see that Obama did not receive a second term. He failed at that mission just as he has failed at all the rest of his endeavors.

This obstructionism is the most destructive form of ruin in this nation. Osama Bin Laden could have only dreamed of wrecking this country like the Republicans have managed to do.

If you love this country, do what's best for the nation

Benefits of three crosses outweigh their cost

The three crosses recently placed near I-75 are just fine. They may even serve as an inspiration for that one person who is lost and wants to give their life to the Lord. The money invested is well worth it if just one person comes to know Christ as their savior.

Then, indeed Jesus will "weep" with joy. Amen.

Why the Three Crosses on Standifer Gap Road are justified

Jesus said,

Matthew 10:38... "And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me."

Matthew 16:24... Then said Jesus unto his disciples, "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me."

Even the Governor Pilate was inspired. John 19:19... And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the Cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

We cannot make the Cross of Christ 'of none effect': 1 Corinthians 1:17... "For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the Cross of Christ should be made of none effect."

Even the great Apostle Paul warned people would perish without the Cross of Jesus: 1 Corinthians 1:18... "For the preaching of the Cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

Yet, we shouldn't be surprised that some will scorn: Philippians 3:18 ("For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the Cross of Christ: 9 whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.")

Finally, the Three Crosses are justified because they point us to our 'Blessed Hope', our 'Expected End', to the knowledge that when we die we will not go to a worse place than this old world: Hebrews 12:2... "looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the Cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

ISLAM QUESTION BY AMOS

Amos, on this site asked, "If Islam is a peaceful religion, I wonder, why did the United States have to shut down its embassies in the Islamic states?"

ANSWER:

Well, Amos, I studied Islam at the feet of some of the highest level Imams and Mullahs in Des Moines, Iowa. I was soon to have my name registered in Chicago, IL as Muhammad Hameed. When they told me that Jesus Christ was not the Son of God and did not die on Calvary's Cross I changed my mind. I didn't finish the class instruction, and I never did become a Moslem.

The Great Religion of Islam can be very complex. The number of denominations/sects of Islam ranges somewhere between 73 to more than 400 denominations.

Nearly all denominations/sects within Islam are peace-loving. But the complexities can cause problems. For instance, in Sahih Muslim Book 032, Hadith Number 6303, Moslem adherents are given only three (3) reasons/occasions that they can tell lies:

"...she heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: A liar is not one who tries to bring reconciliation amongst people and speaks good (in order to avert dispute), or he conveys good. Ibn Shihab said he did not hear that exemption was granted in anything what the people speak as lie but in three cases: in battle, for bringing reconciliation amongst persons and the narration of the words of the husband to his wife, and the narration of the words of a wife to her husband (in a twisted form in order to bring reconciliation between them)."

Some of the population ask: "How many reasons/occasions does Islam permit for telling lies?" Answer: Three (3).

Some of the population ask: "How many reasons/occasions does Jesus Christ permit for telling lies?" Answer: Zero...There is no reason to tell a lie.

So, if one Islamic sect is faithfully attempting to establish Islam by telling their lie (which is sanctioned) and another Islamic sect is trying to do the same, but, according to their denomination's way of believing/understanding...then, it gets complex. Please, try not to get too judgmental of Islam.

Maybe you so-called "x-tians" should read your bible more closely before you go into the world to profess your ignorance and arrogance.

Ex 20:4-5 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.

Today many people think the cross is only a symbol of the Crucifixion, not an idol. However, we have to judge everything by God's words, not our thoughts. God wants His people not to make idols of any kind and not to worship them. Let's find out through the Bible if it's okay before God to believe the cross as a symbol of Jesus' sacrifice.

Lev 26:1 Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it.

God doesn't want us to make any idols to worship. Now let's find out what the cross is in the sight of God.

Jer 10:2-10 Do not learn the ways of the nations … Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; … they are taught by worthless wooden idols.

What can you learn from this verse? The cross is one of the wooden idols from the nations worshipping other gods. It is only a worthless idol. What is going to happen to those who dare to make and bow down to it? Let's find out.

Dt 27:15 Cursed is the man who carves an image or casts an idol―a thing detestable to the LORD.

The cross is a detestable idol before God. Those who make and worship the cross will be cursed.

The church can certainly erect crosses for an obscene amount of money. That is their right. And it is the right of the rest of us to point out their hypocrisy and lack of wisdom. They have lost our respect.

anniebell, anniebell, you poor woman, your first sentence reveals your contempt for Christianity and marks you as an unbeliever. You then go on a rant and actually try to prove your point by using Scripture. Think about that.

The cross is a symbol of the person of Jesus the Christ whom Christians worship and what He did for EVERYONE when he died for our sins.He paid the penalty of death for our sins, the death that we earned and deserve. This includes YOU. You can be forgiven of your sins and have a personal relationship with Jesus by repenting of your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Let go of your will and make Jesus the Lord of your life and know the joy and peace that only God can give you.

In the meantime you will have to alter your travel route in order to avoid that reminder of your sins.

Please understand that without an understanding of dispensations within the Bible and plan of Jesus Christ, all attempts at theological logic fails. One of the first laws of Biblical (Scriptural) understanding is that: If what is stated in the Old Testament is not repeated at least once (in the 'spirit', or, the 'letter' of) in the New Testament, then that Old Testament teaching was never intended for a New Testament dispensation.

If one refuses to acknowledge the fact of dispensations it is akin to refusing to acknowledge developmental stages of a human from birth to adulthood. The Bible says that God 'winked' at certain behaviors which He would later punish.

'Let us 'drink deeply' of the waters of knowledge and understanding...with wisdom.' kwo

Even with the little I know about dispensations within the Bible, I must declare, along with the Psalmist, (Psalm 139:6)... "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it."

It is wrong...a sin, if anyone worships the Cross of Christ Jesus. I personally do not know of anyone who has worshiped the Cross of Jesus Christ. Many things are built on Church grounds and many other places. None of these things are to be worshiped. If the intent is to worship, say, a concrete and metal fountain, then that intent is sinful."

It is sinful to spend that kind of money on something that serves virtually no purpose other than to applaud a church's piety when there is so many in need. Think of the diseases that could be eradicated in the developing world. I would be attracted to a group that did good works and would hear their message, because clearly their faith would be on display. I would not be attracted to a behemoth cross erected for $700 k.

People like con-man and Ken Orr are just two examples of Christians who are so hopelessly brainwashed that they are incapable of seeing the truth or dealing with reality. They have lived for so long in their fantasy worlds of Christian dogma that their reasoning minds have been entirely destroyed and what is so obviously Biblical myth and fairy tale to reasonable minded people has become reality to them. Unfortunately there are many, many other Christians just like them and it is frightening and sad to realize that so many of these self-righteous, arrogant members of the walking dead have infiltrated the political arena and are working hard at trying to force their absurdly regressive agenda on the rest of the country.

I honestly don't know what the answer is, how we might overcome their attempts to take us backward and down into the ugly repressive world of their caricatured Christian imaginings, because it is impossible to engage in logical, reasonable dialogue with them. I only hope that something might take place during my lifetime that will dispel this dark cloud that has hold of their minds and that will rid us once for all of their suffocating grip upon our society and rid our political system of their backward, destructive thinking.

There is still a chance - albeit a very, very slim one - that this nation might become a forward thinking, shining light upon a hill that is truly worthy of being so called, but not as long as we are suffering from the grip of these brain-dead, knuckle-dragging cretins. It would be a start if the Republican Party, which has become infested with so many of them, purged itself of these religious wackos.
