2013 - Dade County Wolverines

Friday, August 16, 2013

photo Hayden Johnson believes the Wolverines are more competitive this year.

Coach: Bradley Warren (24-28 in four years, 83-72 overall)

Last year: 3-7, 3-4 in 7-AA

'13 dreams: The start of last season was a nightmare with Dade County losing its first six games before winning three in a row. Players, especially the veterans, claim they are determined to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2010. "This year will be one of our better seasons, because we're better all-around as a team and not at just one or two positions," junior Roy McMahan said. "I think our depth will be a factor late in some games."

13 years ago: The Wolverines were six years away from a winning season while Warren coached future Georgia Southern All-American Jermaine Austin in the state final four at the Georgia Dome.

13-for-13 contenders: Senior Luke Riddle may play every play. He'll be at quarterback, defensive back, receiver, punter and punt returner. "He can't get hurt," Warren said. "We've also got some linemen who will surprise." A surprise addition is that of 6-foot-4 receiver Mikey Williams, who Warren said will attract double coverage on most plays. n Number of interest: 4.0 - That's the grade point average for sophomore lineman Reid Hulgan, who already is 6-5 and 285 pounds. College scouts should like all of those numbers.

Program superstition: Warren started a tradition - that he hopes gains momentum - in 2008 of giving former football players who graduated in good standing a special large coin. It grants them free admission and a meal on senior night. And with emblems of Dade County schools from the past, it makes for a great golf ball marker.

Q. Who is the goofiest teammate you have?

A. Dallas Robinson, because of the stuff that comes out of his mouth and he's always flexing.

Q. What is your favorite sport besides football?

A. It's baseball. I like competing and I play second base.

Q. What was the difference between last year and this year, at this point?

A. I feel like the team is a lot more competitive and willing to do what it takes to win.
