Chattooga Indians

Coach: Clay Livingston (2-8 here and overall)

Last year: The Indians beat Murray County and Armuchee but lost all other games.

'13 dreams: Livingston said the Indians endured Murphy's Law: Everything that could go wrong last year did go wrong. They struggled with injuries to key players, and the coach knows it's hard to put a positive spin on a 2-8 season at a respectable program. But it's all getting better.

13-for-13 contenders: As with most teams, seniors are the leaders of this squad. Quarterback Nigel Dickerson (5-foot-9, 170) touches the ball on almost every play and is a threat to score on every play; he is the fastest player on the team. Tailback Shawn Lawrence (5-11, 205) doesn't have the top-end spend, but he's quick to shed a tackler one way or another. Lineman Skyler Essmann (6-0, 225) will be counted on for leadership and control of both lines.

Number of interest: 4. That's the number of years since the Indians have had a winning season. That needs to change, according to Livingston: "Winnng is a mindset. It's an environment that we'd like to create here. I think we've got enough to compete every single Friday night."

13 years ago: Coached by John Starr, the Indians started the season with seven straight wins before taking a 41-6 loss at Cartersville, which had Livingston on its coaching staff. Chattooga was upset 42-23 in the first round of the playoffs.

Program superstition: A tomahawk is the last thing that players touch every Friday night of a home game before they head to the field. "I don't know the history," Livingston said. "I probably should."

1-through-3: Senior two-way lineman Skyler Esmann

Q. What are the expectations around Chattooga this year?

A. We want to go to the playoffs and win a playoff game.

Q. What's the best part of being a football player at your school?
