Cellist T.J. Borden and bassist Evan Lipson, two musicians considered "shining stars making names for themselves on the free improv scene," will team with veteran improviser and percussionist Bob Stagner of Chattanooga's Shaking Ray Levi Society for a concert Friday, Aug. 23.

The event, presented by Flying Fingers Productions and the Shaking Ray Levis, promises to be "a vibrant, unpredictable evening of invented sounds and musical virtuosity," says a news release.

Borden of Buffalo, N.Y., drew praise from "The Upstate Soundscape" radio show for "inventing new and unconventional ways to play ... you've never heard a cello played like this."

Lipson, who divides his time between Philadelphia, New York City and Chattanooga, was singled out by Massimo Ricci of music blog Bagatellen as "easily ... among the best bassists I've heard lately, his terrifically strapping tone epitomizing the decision to really learn how an instrument works."

The show starts at 8 p.m. at Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave. Tickets are $8 at the door.
