Child, 2, nearly drowns in Augusta, Ga., mall fountain

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a 2-year-old child nearly drowned after falling into a fountain at an east Georgia shopping mall and was hospitalized in critical condition.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that the accident happened Wednesday afternoon at the Augusta Mall.

Richmond County sheriff's deputies and emergency crews responded to the mall's lower level near Sears shortly before 5 p.m.

Sheriff's Sgt. Shane McDaniel said a nurse who was shopping at the mall performed CPR on the child. Emergency crews continued CPR when they arrived.

Authorities say the child was revived and taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
