OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The U.S. Department of Energy says it will spend at least $4.5 million over the next three years to evaluate polluted groundwater at the Oak Ridge plant.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the federal agency worked in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to come up with a plan to address concerns about groundwater, especially as it leaves the boundaries of the plant.

Environmental regulators have complained over several years that DOE's cleanup program in Oak Ridge is too focused on demolition instead of on soil and water pollution.

Sue Cange, deputy manager of DOE's Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management, says the agency is trying to collaborate more with regulators.
