A man died Wednesday night after an altercation in the Bi-Lo parking lot in the 4500 block of Highway 58.

Police were called to the scene after a report of gunfire at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Sgt. Wayne Jefferson, police information officer for the Chattanooga Police Department.

There, they found a man dead from a gunshot wound in a white Kia. He was pronounced dead on the scene. His name has not been released.

Jefferson said the deceased man reportedly tried to rob a second man he met in the store parking lot. Thus, police are referring to the deceased man as the "suspect" and a second involved man they found at the scene as the "victim."

The victim said he and the deceased man met, got into an argument and then fought in the Bi-Lo lot. A firearm was found in the victim's possession, and Jefferson said the victim claimed to have fired an unknown number of shots to protect himself from the deceased suspect.

The identity and condition of the victim, who was taken to an undisclosed hospital and questioned by police, have not been released at this time.

A crime scene investigation crew was examining the white Kia in the parking lot, as more than half of the parking lot was taped off around 8:30 p.m. The Bi-Lo grocery store maintained regular business throughout the investigation.

No charges were filed as of Wednesday night, Jefferson said.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
