TSWA honors Tennessee Wesleyan freshman Devante' Jenkins

Tennessee Wesleyan freshman Devante' Jenkins from Cross, S.C., was the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's men's basketball player of the week after turning in three double-doubles last week. The 6-foot-5 forward had 28 points and 12 rebounds at Union College, 12 points and 16 rebounds against Southern Polytechnic and 23 points and 10 rebounds against Southern Wesleyan - those last two games at the Bryan College Classic. Jenkins was 11-of-15 from the field against SWU and 13-of-18 at Union. He ranked fourth in NAIA Division II in field-goal percentage (.687) and seventh in total rebounds. The University of Tennessee's Jordan McRae and Jarnell Stokes had been the TSWA men's honorees the previous two weeks. The Dec. 3 women's selection was Fisk's Stevonna Scott from Tyner and Chattanooga State. Middle Tennessee's Ebony Rowe is this week's choice.

• Clarissa Medley and Jamie Chauvin scored 11 and 10 points as the Sewanee women's basketball team beat visiting Covenant 52-48 in an NCAA Division III game Tuesday evening, and Kayla Sewell contributed eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Medley played 15 minutes off the bench and was 4-of-5 from the field. Aleigha Williams and Alexis Storteboom had 12 and 11 points and seven and nine rebounds for Covenant, while Storteboom also made four steals. Morgan Wooward had seven assists and Kiaira Cooper had four steals with eight rebounds in defeat.

• Jorden Williams was 6-of-8 on 3-point shots and scored 20 points and Keshonn Carter had 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals as Sewanee defeated Johnson 75-61 in men's basketball Tuesday night at Sewanee. Leo Born scored 10 points as the Tigers improved to 6-2. Johnson's Louis Allen had a game-high 21 points but was the only player in double figures for the 1-10 Knoxville team.

• Undefeated Talladega College took a 16-point lead into halftime and beat visiting Tennessee Wesleyan 83-71 in women's basketball Tuesday night, dropping the Lady Bulldogs to 6-3 with their third loss in four games. Arielle George and Jordin Feldman scored 18 and 16 points and Ryven Jackson had 15 points, 13 rebounds (nine offensive) and seven assists for Talladega (11-0). Wesleyan shot 37.7 percent from the field, compared to 45.9 percent for the Tornadoes, and committed 28 turnovers.

Softball

• University of Tennessee softball co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly were honored last week at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association convention for victory milestones and as the NFCA Southeast Region staff of the year. They previously coached at UT-Chattanooga. Both were Easton Victory Club honorees last week, Ralph for having surpassed 1,100 career wins (he's 1,119-369-2) and Karen for having reached 800 (she's 841-285-2). Together they are 618-188-2 in 12 seasons with the Lady Vols, with six Women's College World Series appearances and runner-up finishes in 2007 and this year. Tennessee has had the most All-Americans (27) in the nation in the last nine years. The UT staff has been the Southeast Region award winner five times since 2005, including the last two years.

Soccer

• Bryan College juniors Daniel Branley and Gustavo Angel Tamayo were included on the National Soccer Coaches of Association NAIA All-East Region first team for 2013, and Covenant College junior defender Hunter Harrison made the NCAA Division III All-South Atlantic Region third team. Reaching the NAIA national tournament, Bryan finished 15-4 overall and 9-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and won the AAC's regular-season and tournament championships. Branley is a forward, Angel Tamayo a holding midfielder. Harrison anchored the Scots defense that allowed less than a goal a game this season, with six shutouts. He made the USA South all-conference second team and was one of only three USA South players earning all-region recognition.
