Outside hitter Paula Martins and setter Camil Martinez from Lee University were named Friday as first-team volleyball All-Americans by the National Christian College Athletic Association. Both also made the six-player all-tournament team from last week's NCCAA Division I nationals at Kissimmee, Fla., where the Lady Flames (22-11) reached the semifinals. Martins totaled 461 kills and 294 digs this season, while Martinez had 1,024 assists and 294 digs as well. Martins and Lee teammates Becca Bourne, Patricia Orozco and Lauren Williams were NCCAA Scholar-Athletes, as were Shorter's Kelsey Kirk from Northwest Whitfield, Anna Graham from Rainsville, Ala., and Lauren Millsaps from Leesburg, Ala.

Soccer

• In addition to the Lee University players reported in Friday's sports section as NCCAA soccer Scholar-Athletes for 2013, Ryan Alosi from Silverdale Baptist Academy was one of nine Trevecca Nazarene women's players earning Scholar-Athlete recognition.

• The East Ridge Futbol Club 99 Arsenal under-15 boys recently own the Division 1 state soccer championship and will represent Tennessee in the regional tournament next June in Baton Rouge, La. The Arsenal, coached by Chris Gibson, won 1-0 over Tennessee SC, 3-1 over 99 Lobo Rush Premier and 3-0 over FC Alliance 99 Black in the state tournament at Murfreesboro. The Arsenal currently rank third in the Regional Premier League, with two losses. The players are Alex Ahlyege, Axl Arrenondo, Jose Boyzo, Jose Delacruz, Daniel Gomez, Conner Hill, Jesus Huitanda, Nicolas Infante, Francisco Medina, Gustavo Mendiola, Freddy Mendoza, Spencer Miller, Rhys Robertson, Michael Torner, Zeke Warren and Zachary Webber.

Basketball

• Larry Thomas had 22 points and nine rebounds as Birmingham-Southern won 74-64 in NCAA Division III men's basketball Friday night at Covenant College. Ross Welch added 15 points with 4-of-6 3-point shooting for the Panthers (5-1). Colton McGriff and Teron Ferguson had 13 points apiece and 14 and 10 rebounds for Covenant (4-5), which trailed by nine after shooting only 25 percent in the first half.

• The Bryan College men's basketball team improved to 5-8 for the season with a 68-64 win Friday evening at Hiwassee. The Lions close on a high note for the holiday break; their next game is Dec. 30 at home against Maryville College.

• The Tennessee Temple University women's basketball team fell to 2-7 for the season with an 85-74 loss Friday night to the host team in the Union College Holiday Classic in Barbourville, Ky. Amanda Rector had 20 points and six assists and matched Jess Shillito's 10 rebounds while TaQuasha O'Neal also scored 20 points and Jessica Salera had 12 points and seven rebounds for Temple, which plays Montreat in the event today. Amber Taylor had 21 points and six assists and Haley Perkins had 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Union (8-4).

• Kiarra Parks had 15 points and three of Georgia Northwestern's 20 steals in a 58-52 road basketball win Thursday evening against the Covenant College junior varsity. Alisha Bridges had 12 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and four assists and Alyssa Nichelson contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Bobcats (3-9). Jess Fikkert had 25 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots for Covenant. Covenant won the men's game 62-60 with 23 points and four steals from James Leithart, who was 5-of-7 on 3-point shots, and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Luke Gleason. For GNTC (3-5), Veshawn Bell had 17 points and four steals, Tavish Reynolds scored 12 points and LaDarius Watkins collected nine rebounds.
