Former Boyd-Buchanan and Lipscomb University standout Alex Scruggs Young has been named the head volleyball coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville. She already teaches in the CPA Preschool, whose director Kelly Fuller said in a school release, "Alex Young is positive, kind-hearted, energetic and a natural leader. I know she will bring all those traits to the CPA volleyball team. I have no doubt that under her leadership the players and the team will thrive and grow." Young was the first Boyd-Buchanan volleyball player to be all-state and to receive a college scholarship, and in 2004 she was the most valuable player of the Tennessee-Georgia all-star match. She also was part of Lipscomb's first Atlantic Sun-champion and NCAA-tournament volleyball team after being the first recruit for coach Brandon Rosenthal, who said, "Alex Young is truly one of the hardest-working and highest-character individuals that I have come across. She continues to impress me even after her playing days at Lipscomb University. Alex is a genuine and kind soul that will coach with compassion and fairness. She will also push the young women of CPA to achieve their set goals and play at the highest level of high school volleyball. ... Alex posses a 'won't quit' attitude and no doubt will bring that to her coaching position, as she does with the rest of her life." Said Young: "I am blessed to have the opportunity to build on this growing program with volleyball skills and life lessons to help the girls be successful in whatever they do."

Soccer

• Eight players from the East Ridge Futbol Club soccer program were selected to the Tennessee Olympic Development Program after recent tryouts in Hendersonville: Conner Hill in the 1999 group, Alyssa Leverrett in the 2000 group and Ara Rhodes, Ashlyn Spake, Gracie Gilreath, Seth Highfield, Lane Lawrence and Sophia Venable in the 2001 pool. They will compete in regional events against ODP teams from Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. "We are thrilled to have so many of our players selected to be a part of the state team, and I believe it demonstrates the future that we are building with our young teams at East Ridge," ERFC director of coaching Matt Yelton said in a East Ridge Parks and Recreation release. "Making this team comes from hard work and dedication, and that's what we see daily in the Camp Jordan soccer community," said Parks and Recreation director Stump Martin, adding praise for Yelton, fellow directors Dean Wilson and Chris Hennessey "and all the coaches and parents."
