January events for novice gardeners

The Master Gardeners of Hamilton County announce upcoming January events to help novice gardeners.

• Jan. 4: Chattanooga Regional Hosta Society, East Ridge Community Center, 1517 Tombras Ave., 1 p.m., free, 423-344-5876.

• Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27: Master Gardener hot line, 10 a.m. to noon, free. 423-855-6113.

• Jan. 7: An Evening of Learning and Garden Fun with Troy Marden, Chattanooga State Community College, Humanities Building auditorium, 4501 Amnicola Highway, 7 p.m., $5. Host of Nashville Public Television's "Volunteer Gardener" speaks on developing his personal garden over five years from a cold, windy ridge to a beautiful spot filled with rare plants from around the world. 423-855-6113.

• Jan. 13: Tennessee Valley Wild Ones, 63 E. Main St., 6-8 p.m., open to anyone interested in landscaping with native plants, free. chattanooganatives.blogspot.com

• Jan. 14: Chattanooga Herbies, Agriculture Center, 6183 Adamson Circle, 6:30-8 p.m., open to anyone interested in growing herbs, each meeting has speaker on a different herb and food containing that herb to sample. 423-843-5093.
