I thought by now we would have had a toon honoring Kwanzaa the perfect post-modern politically correct holiday.

It is the perfect holiday for the mainstream media. Every other holiday celebrates a religious miracle, patriotic heroes, or America itself. Every other holiday celebrates something greater than the self. The self-absorbed mainstream media has been looking for a self-absorbing holiday. Now they have it, with a self-absorbed President to boot.

What do you get when you take a bad science fiction writer with a desire for immortality and add a lust for tax breaks? Scientology. What do you get when you take a neo-marxist felon and add a desire for black nationalism? Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa has absolutely nothing to do with Africa and everything to do with hating the United States. Kwanzaa is the brainchild of Ron Everett who chaired the African American Studies department of California State University, Long Beach, from 1989 to 2002. Some time before that, he spent several years in jail for torture, changed his name to Maulana Ron Karenga, put on a dashiki, embraced marxism, and declared Kwanzaa a real holiday.

In 1977, Karenga outlined the principles of Kwanzaa and later noted, “People think it’s African, but it’s not. I came up with Kwanzaa because black people wouldn’t celebrate it if they knew it was American. Also, I put it around Christmas because I knew that’s when a lot of Bloods were partying.” Karenga went on to call Christ “psychotic” and declared Christianity a “white religion.” Apparently, the media agreed.

“And that little baby, front and center, would be the one,” Glenn said.

TOE needs to check facts before posting his propaganda.

Bush's final year in office gas was $1.84 a gallon, unemployment was 4.5%. Heaven forbid we go back to the terrible Bush years.

Unemployment in December 2008 In December, the number of unemployed persons increased by 632,000 to 11.1 million and the unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed persons has grown by 3.6 million, and the unemployment rate has risen by 2.3 percentage points. Among the unemployed, the number of job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs rose over the month by 315,000 to 6.5 million in December 2008. Over the past 12 months, the size of this group has increased by 2.7 million. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) rose to 2.6 million in December and was up by 1.3 million in 2008. These data are from the Current Population Survey and are seasonally adjusted. More information can be found in "The Employment Situation: December 2008" (PDF) (HTML), news release USDL 09-0004. Here's another fact for you to digest.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Has the job market finally hit its stride? Hiring continued at a solid pace in November, and the unemployment rate fell to a five-year low ... for the right reasons.

The U.S. economy added 203,000 jobs in November. Economists surveyed by CNNMoney had predicted payroll gains of 183,000 jobs.

The unemployment rate fell to 7.0%.

wallyworld you forget your history so quickly. Clearly a polemical piece you push. The bottom started falling out in the last months of bush the younger's term due primarily to the $4 trillion he spent on war, and we've been suffering ever since. Only Obama's team valiantly worked the recovery and it is finally coming to fryuition in spite of the opposition of the good old boys. Unemployment has been going in one directon ever since, down.

Gasoline prices are driven by the international market, not US policy or economics.

Wally, If I remember right 2007 the unemployment rate was less than 5%. Bush had a democrat house and senate so he was at their mercy, unemployment started to rise in 2008 so we can give the democrat house and senate much of the blame.

Toes, in june 2008 gas was over $3.00 a gallon and Obama said the public would have accepted it better if it had gone up gradually. The gas went down to $1.84 later but not before damage was done. during the past 5 years gas went up gradually just like Obama said it should have. Hmmmm!

There is still no real initiative from any source in government to enable the creation of good paying jobs at the rate needed for a healthy economy. The best way to increase average wage rates and increase tax revenue is to have employers competing for manpower. Inflation would be in play but those unwilling to work without an excuse to not work would be hard pressed to demand care by the government and those willing to work. There would be more available to help those truly disabled, the elderly and children.

Gas prices were also $4.10 6 months earlier, and when Bush left office we were losing 800,000 jobs per month. The effect of those lost jobs showed up in the unemployment numbers in the subsequent months.

If you want to credit Bush for reducing gas prices by over $2.00 a gallon in 6 months I guess you could do that but it wasn't because of some new energy policy he enacted, but rather allowing the economic meltdown that began Sep 2007. A major reduction in demand, couple with consumer fear, equals strong downward pressure on prices.

Bush reduced taxes, eliminating the budget surplus, he initiated two unfunded wars and left office with the economy at the point of total collapse. Obama has failed to repair the financial sector weaknesses that led to that collapse. He has continued an aggressive military policy that has lowered respect for the US. The policies of both men have combined to destroy America's reputation for moral and financial leadership.

The American middle class has been routed and is in full retreat while the upper 15% have never had it better. The imbalance has created anger and mistrust toward government and business. There is every reason to believe that the US is set up for a much bigger fail than 2008 or even 1929. This time looks like a world wide event. Governments are doing almost nothing because it is too late. Central banks are flooding the system with liquidity which is serving to delay, but not prevent, the coming storm.

Meanwhile this comment forum is arguing about past prices of gasoline that are a function of world demand. The cost of energy extraction is rising rapidly. Think of today's gas prices as a huge bargain because world demand continues to increase at 2% per year and production is not keeping pace in a cost effective way.

The facts about the growth of spending under Obama

UPDATE: The Associated Press also dug into the numbers and came to the same conclusion as we did. “The problem with that rosy claim is that the Wall Street bailout is part of the calculation. The bailout ballooned the 2009 budget just before Obama took office, making Obama’s 2010 results look smaller in comparison. And as almost $150 billion of the bailout was paid back during Obama’s watch, the [Nutting] analysis counted them as government spending cuts,” the AP said. “It also assumes Obama had less of a role setting the budget for 2009 than he really did.”

Today marks the first day of the greatest redistribution of worker wealth ever achieved and a tax increase without calling it a new tax. Those earning over $94,000 will pay the same high premium as the ultra wealthy.

A new year will reveal what happens when more spendable dollars go to healthcare insurance premiums or taxes. Normally if you want to have less of something tax it. The wonderment is will this new direction of money reduce the demand for other goods and services? In other words if you want less demand as people spend money then extract some of the money creating the demand. Nancy Pelosi said in supporting extending unemployment to those out of work that it was one of the best stimulus for the economy the government could provide since people would spend that money resulting in continued demand for goods and services. Like all good political hypocrites she did not apply the same logic to this new extraction of money from the economy. It is enough to drive a man to drink.

If there are merely two glasses and half a bottle of bubbly to go around, it is likely because of government disincentives for investing and manufacturing in the industries that produced them. That, along with the sense of helplessness, dependence, and entitlement with which the large, potentially wealth-creating populace has been brain-washed by the Intern, Bennett, & company.

Happy New Years! Eat, drink, and never be content with what reductionist liberals say that you are capable of!

Fairmon and PT, you will find this article interesting.

Yes it is interesting. People, businesses even professional athletes are fleeing France to escape their extreme tax of up to 75%. U.S. businesses are quietly relocating to avoid the extreme U.S.highest published rates in the world. Over 700 U.S. families have left the U.S. for more favorable tax treatment. We only hear about those businesses favored by politicians using the system to avoid the published rates but many pay the 35% or close to it. Taxes paid by any business is included in the cost of their goods or service so the unaware consumer pays the tax. Big "nanny state" governments have never worked and there is no reason to think it will work this time.

There are many options to provide access to healthcare for all but those options don't get votes or increase government control.

the rickaroos and alprovas of this world and forum believe the more government employees a country can have the better, the more social programs a nation has the more stimulus that is created. They don't understand the money government employees receive and the welfare programs are paid for by tax dollars that would have been spent, invested or given away as charity any way. There is no added multiplier by taking tax dollars from one group of people who would spend and invest it and giving it to another group who will do the same.

Freedom of religion is being attacked as a judge ordered an owner of a bakery to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple. The owner stated it was against his religious beliefs and even if it wasn’t he should have the right to serve who ever he wants to serve. Let the customers decided if they want to patronize this business. Also I bet the judge would not have issued the same order on a Muslim who owned a bakery shop. In fact I bet the gay couple never would have gone to a Muslim owned bakery to order a wedding cake.

ObamaCare, takes away our freedoms.

http://blogs.investors.com/capitalhill/index.php/home/35-politicsinvesting/1563-20-ways-obamacare-will-take-away-our-freedoms

In Kilo vs New London the U.S. Supreme Court attacked private property rights by allowing the government to take private property for private development.

The EPA is refusing people the right to develop on their own property.

Our government is forcing us to by toilets, light bulbs, appliances, vehicles, etc that they want to force on us and use the guise that it is for the environmentalist who want to destroy capitalism. You have to use just as much or more water to flush a toilet now then you did in the past, the new light blubs contain mercury and are a hazard to the environment, the CAFE Standards on vehicles have increased fatalities and serious injuries since they went into effect, and the fuel efficiently they have put into law has not done anything to save the environment as they said it would as climate change is a hoax. All it has done is decrease the gas tax revenue and the federal government is now considering having vehicles installed with GPS systems so the government can tax you by the number of miles you drive. Not to mention they can also track with where you are.

Environmentalist say they are concerned about what off shore drilling will an oil company wishes to drill off our shores. Yet these same environmentalists are silent when Obama asked Brazil to drill for more oil of shore and we would be their best customer, or when he asked Saudi Arabia to increase their oil production. Isn’t the environmentalist concern about the environment of the entire planet?

Maybe it has more to do with the government owning or owning a majority of the oil companies in their country until like in the U.S.

For all off you who say you have no problem with our government watching because you have nothing to hide. Then take down the blinds in your house.

I guess that is when climate change was all about the temperatures getting colder. Read this as you may learn something. Also watch the video which has been found from 1912 showing Mawson landing in ice free Commonwealth Bay in 1912.

Increasing the deficit due to tax cuts to stimulate the economy through private consumption or investment. Increasing the debt through increased government deficit spending to stimulate the economy. Your choice as to method of stimulus ... private or public and as we all know people are always more careful spending other people’s money than their own.

BTW ... if government spending is such a great stimulus then why didn’t our economy skyrocket due to the trillion dollars we spent on those expensive wars. After all don’t you Fleabaggers hold to the theory that military spending for WW2 finally pulled the U.S. out of the depression?

rick1, if you run a public business you don't have the right to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, etc. This is old establish law.

And I did not raise the race issue, you raised it with your complaint that a business ought to be able to sell to who ever they want. That issue was settled in the civil rights era. Furthermore, what is it about racial equality that bothers you?

The eminent domain issue was decided by none other than...Supreme Court - law of the land- and the issue did involve public policy no matter how much we may not like it, including me.

As for global warming, climate change, etc., you have yet to actually read the scientific work that has been done. Rely on a conservative think tank for political talking points, but not as a good source for peer-reviewed technical literature. Basically you come across as technically illiterate. I'll wait for you to bring some real science to the table but will not hold my breath.

As for the argument of causation, it is not absolute but pretty certain. In science we have ethical considerations when a person applies for a grant. Were someone to propose that CO2 raised global temperature with a reversible effect that spans the order of at least a thousand years or so, and proposes to burn as much crude as is necessary to quadruple the CO2 content of the atmosphere to test the hypothesis, it would never pass muster - too dangerous if it is a correct hypothesis. Still we pump more and more CO2 into the air due to regulatory restraint. Go figure.

As for the mercury comment, sorry you missed my irony.

Environmentalists did not block oil production in the US, that was done at the legislative and administrative level. My point is we have plenty of oil and don't need to drill off shore. The second point is if environmentalists in the USA succeed in effecting such a public policy that is within their rights, but they have no voice in what a foreign country does.

As for your home videos, only the voyeurs at Langley and NSA enjoy them. (Thank goodness.)

Toes, one president commenced a $trillion/yr spending spree without raising taxes to pay for it (for you, jt6, it is called a "guns and butter program"), and also as far back as the Clinton era a housing policy was started that all made for a great perfect storm devastating the economy.

Beginning in the last days of Bush the younger and Obama's administration , the government began a focussed plan to inject money into the economy to stop the crash, and there is long history that shows federal spending in bad economic times stimulates the economy. We are seeing that now, it works. Now as the Federal stimulus spending slows and then stops we see the debt starting to get paid down until as in the Clinton ear we run a positive cash flow paying off the debt. It kills you to see it, I know.

Have at it, I know you will.

inquiring =mind I don't have a problem with race equality all I'm saying if a business is foolish enough not to serve someone based on the race they will not be in business very long. You still have not answered about the religious belief of the owner being trampled.

Eminent domain has always been done for public use never private and yes the Supreme Court ruled in favor of this but it attacks the rights of private property owners.

You have not presented anything to back up your claim of climate change so you may want to look in the mirror as you are the one who is technically illiterate as you have not brought anything to the table to support your view.

Environmentalist are constantly filing injunctions to fight drilling on federal land and if we had plenty of oil then why was Obama asking Brazil and Saudi Arabia to drill for more and told Brazil we would be their best customer.

Please bring proof to the table next time because you where not able to factually dispute what I provided. All you did was attack the source.

Would exempting those who think AHA requirements is in conflict with their beliefs be discriminating against those who don't have those beliefs? Those entities will eventually switch to coverage with a defined benefits program that deposits a fixed amount to an employee healthcare expenses reimbursable account with the employee using it to pay medical expenses, taxes or to purchase their own insurance. The losers will be the affected individuals. Many large employers have already done this including I think IBM.

Toes, please, anybody can post almost anything on u-tube and on political hack web sites. The u-tube clip appears to be some kind of dinner club meeting and he only repeated things already known about the CO2 balance, the existence of prior periods of climatic change (which hypothesized causes by the way are quite relevant today), etc. You have yet to present a collection of peer-reviewed technical articles supporting your political position.

And, " left wing pseudo-scientists with an agenda ... falls in line with the leftist ideology" do not get very far in the world if science and technology where facts are the basis of decision. And by the way, most engineers and scientists lean right.

One of your web sites is a puff site created by the author to push his own books (Robert Felix). The second one that uses the ludicrous claim "Al Gore-linked Goddard Institute " is run by a red Alex Jones who is a radio talk show host with a license to sell products by attractive gullible listeners. Also on his site, an argument of a foreign conspiracy plot for 9/11, and Dr. Sherri Tenpenny who appears to be trying to revive the old mercury(Thimerosal)-in-vaccines-causes-autism hoax.

What I find interesting about the alleged NASA hoax(and its refutation) you cite is that all you have to do is look at satellite images of the Arctic 20 years ago, 10 years ago, and this year to appreciate what is happening.

What is wrong with this climate change debate is it has devolved into a political argument devoid of factual decision making and fueled only by a conservative and liberal fanaticism.

Sorry to sound harsh, but don't you examine your sources for credibility before you cite them? The global warming trend is real. (Also, in case you find this out yourself, the advance of ice sheets can happen with remarkable rapidity on a geologic timescale once the point is reached where the snow cover does not disappear in the warm season.)

Sure, poor children, particularly blacks, will be given "vouchers" to attend private church schools where they will be taught to be compliant worker bees. They might even rise to become successful "uncle toms", never getting a place at the table but rewarded by the white power structure for keeping "their people" comfortable in their poverty and well aware of their subordinate place. Black preachers have been shown to be masters at this.

toes and rick1,

The debate over AGW/climate change has been over for ten years. The science is there, it's not a theory any longer. The oil industry has hired a bunch of shills to publish doubt creating articles for those who are looking for a reason to deny reality, but reality is now known and you are actually endangering the only home humans (and other biota) have by persisting in ignoring the hard facts.

Planet earth has never faced a greater challenge than that which is currently before us. Some of the recent predictions cal for 3.5-4C increase by mid century which will cause a massive methane release in the Arctic. Worst case, the methane could push temperature up to 15-20C above the present. That's game over…a dry arid planet like Mars.

You don't need to be listening to fringe chatter and outliers when over 90% of climate scientists worldwide agree on the basic premise.

It's time for all humans to put our differences aside and try to avert a doomsday of our own making. I don;t like our odds, but we have to try.

Most people think of a theory as a guess that hasn't been proven. But that's not what a theory is. The proper term for a guess is a hypothesis. When you prove or disprove your hypothesis you have the beginning of theory. In science, a theory is something that's considered to be proven. Asking someone if they 'believe' in climate change is like asking if you 'believe' in the theory of gravity. It's sad to see the United States losing so much ground in the education of their people and letting them live in 'blissful' ignorance.

Dudeabides - a person can use scientific facts to argue a political position fairly or not , and that is why it pays to understand science, but the person to fear, the present danger, is the one who used lies to argue a political position.

And by the way, soakya, nice comments about hypothesis, etc and your dry humor about annual climate change, I like it. But a little point of clarification, science is all about testing hypotheses to understand how well a mathematical model fits facts. Gravity is not a law except in a layman's terms and experience.

Newton's theory of gravity predicts the behavior of falling objects, the influence of objects in "close"vicinity, etc and works quite well in normally encountered cases. But Newton's "laws" (his math) break down in the presence of extremely large masses. This proves that Newton's "law" of gravity is a theory and identifies where the theory fails, hence it is not a law that can be generalized to describe all interactions of objects with mass. (It can't describe how a gravitational field can bend the path of light, for example.)

The fundamental perplexity of Newton's theory is it implies a "spooky" action at a distance, that is, an immediate effect felt on an object at a distance which impies infinitely fast communication of a force.

Einstein formulated another theory that more accurately describes behavior in the conditions where Newton's theory fails, but for practical purposes only if you live near a black hole or practice some of the more esoteric scientific disciplines do you need to trouble yourself with Einstein's theory. (Einstein's theory says a mass distorts space giving the result that is felt as gravity, and bends light.) :-)

What school did you attend, soakya - Westboro Baptist School of Creationism and Anti-Science? No legitimate science teacher would have taught such bunk as you just stated. A scientific theory is NOT an unproven law or in any way less valid than a law. It's just that theories and laws serve different purposes. A law more or less describes WHAT nature does under given conditions and a theory explains HOW nature functions or works. And most theories will probably never become laws but it's not because a theory is somehow less valid; it's merely because they serve different purposes. Furthermore, a law is a law only because it can be expressed in a mathematical formula. That's why it is in the sciences of physics and chemistry where "laws" abound. It is difficult, if not impossible, on the other hand, to express a Biological theory in a mathematical formula. But that does not make a biological theory any less valid or substantial than a law of physics. In the minds of most scientists any long held theory, based on sufficient data and empirical evidence to support it, is just as valid as a scientific law.

TOES, in that video clip of the geologist blabbing away about what a "hoax" climate change is, his argument is flawed from the get-go. He claims that his research is superior to that of climate scientists because he has taken into account the climate change of the past and implies that climate scientists have neglected to do so. He is WRONG. No group of scientists has studied climate change more in depth and for as long a period of time as have climate scientists. That is what they do, after all, it is their field of expertise. And there is an entire branch of climate science, called paleoclimatology, devoted entirely to the study of past climate change, that is every bit as encompassing as what any geologist or group of geologists has done.

It is also worth pointing out that the geologists who are most skeptical about AGW are those who are closely aligned with Big Oil and who study geology (and/or climate change) with a definite bias towards commercial exploitation. But the vast majority of geologists who are not so economically or politically motivated agree completely with the findings of climate scientists, 97% of whom are of the consensus that climate change as it is happening today is primarily a man-made phenomenon.

What's more, it's interesting that you climate-change deniers are quick to make the argument that all climate scientists all over the world are left-leaning socialists who are shills for the government, but you completely turn a blind eye to the obvious fact that most climate-change denying scientists, almost none of whom are actual climate scientists themselves but scientists in other fields and therefore less knowledgeable, are conservative and therefore defenders of the status quo, or else they are conspicuously aligned with the fossil fuel industries in some way. It's one thing to be skeptical, but if you're going to be TRULY skeptical you have just as much reason to be skeptical of the pundits and scientist-shills for Big Oil as you do of the climate change scientists. But you deniers swear up and down, with unwavering certainty, that climate change is NOT man-made. Your stubborn insistence that it is ABSOLUTELY NOT happening only reveals how you are letting your ideology get in the way of being truly objective and rational about it.

It's possible that I was wrong about Mr. Hamoodi."[15] West was charged with violating Articles 128 (assault) and 134 (general article) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. During a hearing held as part of an Article 32 investigation in November 2003, West stated, "I know the method I used was not right, but I wanted to take care of my soldiers."[16] The charges were ultimately referred to an Article 15 proceeding rather than court-martial, at which West was fined $5,000.[15] Lieutenant Colonel West accepted the judgment and retired with full benefits in the summer of 2004. Asked if he would act differently under similar circumstances, West testified, "If it's about the lives of my soldiers at stake, I'd go through hell with a gasoline can."[16] At his hearing, West said that there were no ambushes against American forces in Taji until he was relieved of his leadership post a month later.[16] After West's retirement he received more

But yddem. I totally understand. Any black conservative is going to come under withering fire from the left. That's a theory, hypothesis, and law of nature.

I didn't color any story, no truth. I certainly did not make up anything to enhance a point of view, which you have done on more than one occasion. You left out that lt. col. west was named the ROTC instructor of the year in 1993. Shame on you.

You claimed, falsely, that when the senate dems provided for cloture of debate on judicial nominees by vote of a simple majority, they changed a rule written by Thomas Jefferson 237 years ago.

The latter is not a lie. the former was maybe, maybe, and error. Telling a lie is a willful, witting, falsehood. Of that I'm clean as a whistle.

So, no truth did not make it up. No truth is witless. It's good we cleared that up.

It's a waste of time to even try. Racism and bigotry is taught to those who adopt it. Once it takes root, there is little that will change people's minds.

"They may be like those posting here that attack the messenger instead of the message."

That is a very correct statement.

"Do you make sure the family members know you are offended, assuming you are, when they use offensive words or objectionable language?"

Oh they know alright, but for the most part, they do not care, which is typical of such people.

They would never, ever...be impolite in mixed company, but around us fellow whities...it's all good to them.

Another example of no truth's lack of wit is his reference to my 3 sentences about lt. col. west as "withering fire."

BTW, no truth, west received several awards for merit and rose to the rank of lt. col., so he had a good career up to the point where he screwed up and had to resign with his pension rather than face a court martial, but I doubt he would agree with minimus that he is a "bad ass republican nigga."

Nothing to read here tonight. Time for a change of subject. Seems that way too many people are just interested in lobbing insults.

What a waste of time.

But then, when some people have no life, that's all they have left to do with their time.

Al, you are a puzzlement, at the very least. This is a part of your post this evening:

fairmon asked: "Do you make sure the family members know you are offended, assuming you are, when they use offensive words or objectionable language?"

you replied: "Oh they know alright, but for the most part, they do not care, which is typical of such people.

They would never, ever...be impolite in mixed company, but around us fellow whities...it's all good to them."

I don't understand what type of a man allows family members to knowingly offend him by using objectionable language. I do not expect you to be able to explain why you just sit there and take it. Do not bother to try.

You're the one who wears panties, sweetie. And all I said was "typical liberal, playing the race card." The comment was sarcastic and understated, but I can see it got your estrogen flowing.

I thought you were just kidding, but you apparently were serious. What statement do you attribute to me that supports your claim that I am a racist?

yddem wrote: "I don't understand what type of a man allows family members to knowingly offend him by using objectionable language."

I'm white. I don't get personally offended if someone refers to someone of another race with a slur. I do feel ashamed because I might be related to them for doing so, but offended? Nope.

"I do not expect you to be able to explain why you just sit there and take it."

I tolerate it because most of those who use such slurs are older than myself, and I was raised to respect my elders. It is not my place to correct them. They know I am not on board with such crap, but they have always referred to others not like themselves in such a manner and nothing is going to change them.

Subsequent generations will weed such hatred out one by one, but I suspect there will always be those who hate for one reason or another.

Okay, al, I got it now. "Do you make sure the family members know you are offended, assuming you are," and "Oh they know alright" means you "don't get personally offended." Thanks for clearing that up.

I missed the early post by junk trash, quoting Erick Erickson [what a Rush Limbaugh wannabe, even with his doughboy looks, that guy is]:

Jt: "I thought by now we would have had a toon honoring Kwanzaa the perfect post-modern politically correct holiday."

Erickson: "It is the perfect holiday for the mainstream media. Every other holiday celebrates a religious miracle, patriotic heroes, or America itself. Every other holiday celebrates something greater than the self."

Congrats, jt, for your celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the social and economic achievements of the American labor movement.
