Brandon Cole, Robert Troino lead Bryan over Maryville

The Bryan College men's basketball team had warmed up as the pre-Christmas part of its schedule progressed, and the Lions resumed play Monday night with another win, 76-73 over visiting Maryville College. Brandon Cole had 28 points and three steals and Robert Troino scored 24 points with five 3-point baskets while adding nine rebounds for the Lions (6-8), who got 11 points and eight rebounds from Bryan Landers and five assists from Logan Sharp. For Maryville, Jaumonee Byrd had 26 points and eight rebounds and Spencer Shoffner and Oscar Butler added 18 and 16 points.

• Daronte Clark with 16 points led four double-figure scorers for Lindsey Wilson in an 83-60 men's basketball win over Tennessee Temple on Monday at the Kentucky college. Elliot Johnson scored 16 also to lead Temple (7-7), while Rashaud Bell and Hampton Mack scored 12 and 10 and Jarrett Smith pulled down 10 rebounds. The Crusaders shot 31.7 percent from the field compared to 50.8 percent for Lindsey Wilson (9-5), which erupted from a 4-0 deficit to a 34-16 lead.

• NCAA Division I member Austin Peay thumped new NAIA team Dalton State 93-57 in a men's basketball exhibition game Monday in Clarksville, Tenn., as Travis Betran hit six of nine 3-point shots and totaled 24 points and Zavion Williams added 17. The Governors shot 70 percent from the field while holding the Roadrunners to 30 percent. Demetrice Jacobs had 20 points and nine rebounds and Preston Earle scored 15 points for Dalton State.

Academics

• As the Dalton State athletic program gets ready for its second semester of four-year competition, the school's scholarshipped and otherwise recruited athletes have compiled a 3.02 grade point average as a whole, led by a 3.34 for the women's tennis team and a 3.31 for men's cross country. Forty-eight percent of the student athletes had GPAs of 3.0 or higher, athletic director Derek Waugh revealed in a release. Men's runners Brody Cook and Parker Cook and tennis player Adam Hornsby had 4.0s for the fall semester. "In looking at the athletic department as a whole, it has been a successful semester academically," Waugh said. "Adjusting to a first semester in college can be difficult, so I expect our students to do even better as time progresses."
