CANTON, Ga. - A northwest Georgia girl has been hospitalized after being kicked in the head by a stray mule.

The girl's neighbor, Thomas Ross, told WSB-TV the child came to try helping corral mules that wandered onto his land in Canton Tuesday afternoon when she was kicked in the head. Ross said the blow knocked the young girl unconscious.

Cherokee County fire department spokesman Tim Cavender told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the girl was breathing when emergency responders arrived.

The mules' owner, Tim Byess, led the animals into a trailer and told the station he feels terrible about what happened.

Byess said he's unsure of how they wandered away from his property.

Canton is about 40 miles north of downtown Atlanta.
