Hancock County District Attorney Jim Drozdz died in a single-car accident Saturday in Wildwood, Ga., authorities have confirmed.

Authorities say Drozdz, a 53-year-old native of Hamilton, Ill., was also a truck driver for Dot Foods.

Drozdz lost control of his tractor-trailer around 11:15 p.m. Saturday on Georgia Highway 299 while entering the eastbound ramp to I-24. The Georgia State Patrol said Drozdz tried to make a left turn on the entrance ramp, but the truck left the roadway and struck an embankment.

The vehicle was only traveling 1-3 mph at the time of the accident, according to Dade County Coroner Johnny Gray, and Drozdz had no injuries when he was found.

Drozdz was pronounced dead on the scene Sunday at 1 a.m. An autopsy and toxicology tests were performed Sunday, according to the Quincy Herald-Whig in Quincy, Ill.

Drozdz was elected to the state attorney position in 2004 and ran unopposed in 2008 and 2012 elections. Brian Hunter, the assistant state attorney, will take over the office until the county appoints a new state attorney.
