A surprise snow storm left drivers slipping and sliding today.

The snow -- an inch in low lying areas and more on the mountains -- is expected to turn into rain later today.

"The worst part is that it was falling so fast and it was covering roads more than people were anticipating," said Jessica Winton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn.

A cold front that moved in this morning brought the snow, but Winton said the snow won't last.

"We have a break behind this," she said. "The temperature actually is going to warm up in the next hour or two. ... We'll see mostly rain this afternoon. Nothing major expected."

The high today will be 42. By Sunday, it will be sunny again and the high will be 49.

The weather service has reports of around an inch accumulated in the Chattanooga area and as far east as Knoxville.
