State investigators confirm that an inmate was killed today at the high maximum security prison in Jackson, Ga.

While officials wouldn't say who the inmate was, sources close to the prison say the inmate had just been transferred from Hays State Prison and was killed by another transferring Hays inmate.

The inmate was the fourth from Hays killed in a spate of violence that stretches back six weeks.

He was killed inside the transfer yard at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification prison, the sources said. The inmates had just been bused to Jackson this morning from Trion, Ga., they said.

The Diagnostic and Classification prison is where close security and death penalty prisoners go as well as inmates about to be transferred to another prison in Georgia.

High maximum is the highest level of security in the Georgia prison system.
