The Lee University basketball teams beat visiting Southern Wesleyan in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday evening, 98-44 for the NAIA's seventh-ranked Lady Flames and 85-83 for the No. 2 Flames. Hollie German and Julia Zimmerman scored 20 and 18 points with four and six 3-point baskets and Jenna Adams had 15 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots for the Lady Flames (21-2, 11-2). Myriah Iles scored 11 points, Christina Johnson had 10 points with 10 rebounds and Brooke Hamby had nine assists and three steals. Jamorris Gaines was 4-of-6 on 3s and scored 23 points in the Lee men's narrow win, and Will Barnes scored 22. Steve Bennett had 14 points and Chad Lee contributed 10 for the Flames (23-1, 12-1), who led by four at halftime and then shot 62.1 percent in the second half. But SWU (12-10, 6-7) shot 54.3 percent in the half and stayed close till the end, led by Kenny Joyner and Nikola Lambic with 25 and 21 points and eight and nine rebounds and Kenny Holmes with 16 points, six assists and four steals.
• Cleveland High School graduate Ish Sanders led the Carson-Newman men's basketball team to a 73-43 home win Wednesday against Tusculum with 18 points, four steals and four assists. Cody Henegar from Marion County scored eight points for the Eagles, who rose to 15-4, 8-3 in the South Atlantic Conference.
• UTC men's basketball assistant coach Casey Long will be the guest speaker at the Mocs Club's "Breakfast With the Coach" at 8 a.m. Saturday at Wally's Restaurant on McCallie Avenue. That's 30 minutes earlier than usual. The public is invited to attend and order off the menu; reservations are not necessary.
Softball
• Senior left fielder Whitney Hammond from Girls Preparatory School was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored as the fifth-ranked Tennessee softball team began its season Thursday with an 18-3 win over Southern Utah at St. George, Utah. She was one of five Lady Vols with three hits; Madison Shipman drove in five runs.
Football
• Former Grace Academy football player Stephen Polley was announced Wednesday among the 15 football signees for Dickinson (N.D.) State University. Polley, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound offensive lineman who graduated from Grace in 2009 and was chosen to play in the Tennessee-vs.-Kentucky all-star game, was listed as a transfer from UTC. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
