Employees at Dalton, Ga., plant hit by ID theft

A number of employees at Dalton, Ga. automotive parts manufacturer Shiroki-Ga LLC have been victims of identity theft, according to Bruce Frazier, spokesman for the Dalton Police Department.

A Dalton man who works there filed a complaint with police after he applied for a Discover credit card, and "they said somebody using his Social Security number had applied to get a card," Frazier said Monday.

A Dalton woman who works at the plant filed a complaint last week with police, Frazier said, after trying to file her federal tax refund -- only to find "somebody had already filed."

Plant employees who live in Whitfield and Murray counties have filed identity theft reports with the respective sheriff's offices, Frazier said.

Employment at the plant "would appear to be the common factor," among the identity thefts, Frazier said. He didn't know how many Shiroki employees were affected.

Calls seeking comment made Monday and Tuesday to an official at the Dalton Shiroki-Ga plant weren't returned.

An employee who answered the phone at Shiroki North America Inc., in Smithville, Tenn., said the company, which has a third plant in Gordonsville, Tenn., makes parts for Toyota and General Motors, including window and seat components. The Dalton plant has been in operation since the mid-1990s, she said.
