Four Alabama football players were suspended indefinitely Tuesday afternoon by coach Nick Saban, a day after two students were assaulted and robbed on campus.
Running back Brent Calloway, defensive end D.J. Pettway, linebacker Tyler Hayes and safety Eddie Williams were arrested by university police early Monday morning. Pettway and Hayes were charged with two counts of second-degree robbery, while Williams was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and fraudulent use of a credit card.
Williams also was arrested Sunday for carrying a pistol without a permit.
Calloway was not involved with Monday's robberies but was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card. He was arrested in October 2011 and charged with second-degree marijuana possession.
"The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people," Saban said in a released statement. "The university and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program."
According to the arrest report, one student was knocked unconscious in being hit in the head, ribs and back by Pettway, Hayes and Williams. The student's backpack was stolen, and among the items inside was an Apple MacBook Pro.
In a separate incident, Williams reportedly punched a student in the face and head and took his wallet while Pettway and Hayes waited in a car. Williams then used the student's university card and debit card to buy snacks from a Bryant Hall vending machine.
Williams was released on a $65,000 bond, while Hayes and Pettway were released on $60,000 bonds. Calloway was released on a $5,000 bond.
The most prominent player of the four in the 2012 season was Pettway, who had eight tackles, four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as a redshirt freshman. He had an 11-yard sack in the 42-14 drubbing of Notre Dame in the BCS championship game.
Hayes had 14 tackles last season as a true freshman, while Calloway's redshirt freshman season consisted of 63 rushing yards, with 52 of those in the rout of Western Carolina. Williams, who was Rivals.com's No. 1 athlete prospect nationally in the 2012 signing class out of Panama City, Fla., redshirted last season as Alabama won its second consecutive national title and its third in four years.
Pettway is from Pensacola, Fla., while Hayes is from Thomasville, Ala. Calloway is from Russellville, Ala.
