JASPER, Tenn. — The Jasper Board of Mayor and Aldermen has a new member.
The board voted unanimously this week to appoint Paul "Mac" Bumpus to the seat vacated by Paul Evans after he was elected mayor in November.
"We had several people to stand up and offer their services to the town," Evans said. "We had some good people to come forward, and we do appreciate them."
Officials said Bumpus will serve a two-year term that will expire at the next regular election in 2014.
Bumpus is no stranger to public service, having served on the Jasper Planning Commission for more than 30 years.
He said he appreciated the board's approval of him for the position.
"I will certainly do the best job I can for the city of Jasper," he said.
Alderman Steve Looney said he has worked with Bumpus and known him "for years and years."
"I think he'll be a real adequate fill-in for us," he said.
The board discussed potential nominees for the job many times over the last two months, Evans said.
"I feel we've got a good man," he said. "I feel like the other people [who volunteered] were also good people, but we are very glad to have him."
