Newell Avenue fire was arson, chief says

A house fire on Newell Avenue in East Chattanooga today was deliberately set, Chattanooga Fire Chief Randy Parker said in a news release.

Firefighters were called to the house fire at 1800 Newell Ave. at 5:13 p.m., according to the release.

No one was home when firefighters arrived at 5:13 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the eaves, according to a news release.

The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

Parker said investigators discovered evidence the fire was set, with multiple points of origin. He said damage is estimated at $15,000.

The investigation continues.
