The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga began play in Auburn's softball tournament Friday night with a 6-1 loss to Kansas. Anyssa Robles batted in the Lady Mocs' run and went 1-for-3 along with Kasey Tydingco and Sarah Beth Roberts, while Sara Poteat walked twice. UTC (1-5), which made five errors while allowing six hits, is scheduled to play twice today and once Sunday.
• Former GPS standout Tory Lewis was 1-for-2 as the fourth-ranked Tennessee softball team beat North Carolina State 7-0 and then went 1-for-1 with an RBI as the Lady Vols (7-0) beat Coastal Carolina 8-0 on Friday.
• After beating Tennessee Wesleyan twice by 6-0 scores Thursday in Athens, Lee University's softball team downed Bryan 8-3 and 1-0 on Friday in Dayton. Lexie Dean was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Ana Coscorrosa was 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and an RBI in the first game Friday for Lee (4-0), while Heather Daniel was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for the Lady Lions (2-4). Caroline MacAusland and Angie Hughes combined to pitch a three-hitter for Lee in the second game, ended after five innings due to darkness, and Coscorrosa doubled for the RBI. Sarah Hundley pitched a six-hitter in defeat. Jessa Watts and Hughes ptched one-hitters for Lee with six and nine strikeouts Thursday, when Dezirae Parsons was 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs, Amanda Lynn was 3-for-4 and Dominique Hannah doubled twice and scored twice in the first game. Coscorrosa was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Hannah was 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two.
• Covenant College lost its season-opening softball doubleheader to Bluefield on Friday at Warner Park, 11-0 in the first game and 10-9 in the second. Chandler Shepherd and Jenni Jobe each was 3-for-4 in the second game and scored three and two runs for Covenant. Courtney Wagoner was 2-for-3 in game one.
Baseball
• Former Southeast Whitfield and Chattanooga State player Dylan Massengill pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts as Tennessee Temple completed a 6-1, 9-0 sweep at Hiwassee on Friday for the Crusaders' first two wins of the season. Only a hit batter and his own throwing error kept it from being a perfect game. Hunter Giles pitched a two-hitter, allowing only an unearned run, in the opener, wen Ryan Bruce was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and Bradley Grant and Caden Shadrick each doubled, singled and batted in a run. In game two, Trey Hill was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Brandon Blome had two hits and two RBIs for Temple. Dustin Crumley was 2-for-3 with a double and Sean Leitstein and Josh Thomas each was 2-for-4, Leitstein with an RBI. The teams called off their scheduled game today at Red Bank but may make it up Monday.
• A two-run single by Corey Davis in the seventh inning held up for a 3-1 victory for the Lee University baseball team and an SSAC doubleheader sweep of visiting Mobile on Friday. The Flames (9-2, 2-0) won the first game 6-3 as Mark Silva went 3-for-3 and scored twice and Davis was 2-for-4 behind pitchers Myles Smith and Andy Hills. Silva and Davis were among the six Flames with an RBI apiece. Brady Renner was 3-for-4 and scored a run in game two, when Jose Samayoa, Kyle Briner and Alex Moore did the Lee pitching. Philip McDuffie's homer was the run for Mobile (5-4, 0-2).
• Reigning NAIA baseball champion Tennessee Wesleyan defeated Indiana Tech twice Friday in games moved up a day because of today's weather forecast, 7-6 and 4-1. David Donald was 5-for-7 in the sweep for the Bulldogs, with a homer and three RBIs in the 7-6 win when Trey Griffin was 4-for-4 and Travis Burnside was 3-for-4 and scored three runs from his leadoff position. Burnside had two RBIs in the other game, when Tyler Wilson and Noah Piard combined to pitch a five-hitter.
• Cleveland State edged Georgia Perimeter 6-5 and lost 7-3 in their junior college baseball games Friday in Cleveland. Brandon Zajac got the host Cougars' pitching win with a save by Andre Wilson. Evan Speicher and Michael Hargrove doubled and scored for Cleveland State (5-3) in the opener, when Zach Janes, DeAndre Allen and Speicher had RBI singles, and Chase Edwards had an RBI single, Speicher doubled in a run and Cody Hiefnar tripled and scored on a Hargrove sacrifice fly in game two.
• Former Baylor School pitcher Jeff Burke made his debut Friday for Boston College, working a 1-2-3 eighth inning in 11 pitches as the Eagles lost 4-1 to Virginia Commonwealth in the Country Inn & Suites Elon Invitational at Elon, N.C. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound right-hander graduated from Baylor in 2011 before spending a year at The Loomis Chafee School in Windsor, Conn., where he was team MVP last spring. Burke is the son of Chattanooga Lookouts owner Frank Burke.
• Covenant College bounced back from a 6-5 loss to visiting Emory & Henry with a 7-1 win Friday as Micah Mabe and Spencer Smith combined to pitch a four-hitter on the Scots' Lookout Mountain field. Scott Gillespie was 2-for-4 with a first-inning two-run homer and another RBI and K.C. Simons and Stephen Wray each had two hits and scored twice in the win for Covenant (3-1), while Reid Pope was 0-for-1 with two RBIs and a run scored. Wray tripled in that game after going 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game, when Gillespie tripled in a run and scored. Eric Houff was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs and Caleb Rotton added a two-run homer in the win for the Wasps (2-3).
Track and Field
*• Signal Mountain High School junior Preston Elwell recently was honored as a National Elite Youth All-American javelin thrower for the intermediate boys' age group (15-16). Already a USATF Junior Olympics All-American for a fourth-place finish in the national Junior Olympics in Baltimore last July, he won the USATF Region 6 intermediate division with a throw of 161 feet, 4.5 inches -- the 11th longest throw in the nation in his age group last year. Also on the Signal Mountain basketball team, Elwell threw the shot and discus as well as the javelin at his previous school in Montgomery, Ala.
