Alabama court defendant commits suicide during recess

JASPER, Ala. - Authorities in Walker County say a Graysville man on trial for burglary, armed robbery and assault committed suicide in a cemetery during a court recess.

Officials say 27-year-old Daniel Lavale Williams shot himself around noon at a cemetery in Jasper Tuesday. Williams was taken to the University of Alabama Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Jasper Police Cpt. Larry Cantrell told AL.com the man's girlfriend was with him in the cemetery and is cooperating in the investigation.

Walker County Circuit Court Judge Jerry Selman declared a mistrial in the case. A co-defendant who pleaded guilty and testified against Williams and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
