Dalton police say West Walnut Avenue worst site for crashes

West Walnut Avenue in Dalton, Ga., has the highest number of recorded crashes month after month, Dalton police said this morning in a news release warning of the dangers of distracted driving.

Most of the crashes occur in an area from Market Street to Dug Gap Road, and while most are not severe many could be avoided, the release states.

According to police, 42 percent of all crashes in the city are rear-end collisions, often caused by drivers in congested areas distracted by actions ranging from talking on the phone and eating to reading a GPS or adjusting the radio.

Because of the high number of rear-end crashes and distracted driving-related crashes, the Dalton Police Department’s traffic enforcement unit will be using special enforcement details, stopping cars and speaking to motorists in high-crash areas to target drivers who are driving distracted.

To request safe driving program for your group or organization, call an officer from the traffic enforcement unit at 706-278-9085, ext. 9124.
